Hi Closed, I havent got another screen to try. I threw my old desktop one a while ago because it was sat in the shed wish I hadnt now.

    I have got a Toshiba Satellite L300D

Just followed your steps and I have the light on to say the power is connected then the next light is on which shows the computer is switched on. It didnt make any noises can hear the fan quietly and thats it really just a black screen.

Have you got a LCD/Plasma TV? If you have then check if it has connection for PC. If it has then you can use it as a monitor.
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D

to set it to boot from cd first...

switch on, keep tapping F2 and Del to get into BIOS, then set the boot order to cd drive first, hdd second. Before saving changes and exiting BIOS, open the cd tray and pop the cd in, close it up, save BIOS changes & exit, then it will boot from the cd drive.
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • You say that the CMOS battery is duff, the battery does not hold charge & the laptop has intermittent boot probles, which could or could not be the hard drive.

For just over £100 these days, you can pick up a New/Nearly New with Warranty Netbook, then for £20 ishy you can pick up an external DVD/CD Writer if you require one.

If its £20-30 to replace the CMOS battery, £15-20 for a new battery, then £25-30 for an Hard Drive, the costs soon build. I sold my damaged Toshiba U300 laptop last year with a faulty display for just under £90 on eBay.

Maybe its time to move on, or start looking..

Hi Wazza, No I havent got an LCD/Plasma tv unfortunately. Still got an old silver bulky thing LOL!!

Gun Jack Ive tried getting into the BIOS not happening at all pressed all the different F keys and I think now Ive probably well wrecked the laptop by starting it and shutting it down so many times.

Alias_Omega Thanks for your reply too. I think I will start looking for a new one. Dont think much of the Toshiba to be honest and ive always thought it wasnt built very well and seemed a bit loose.

Thanks to you all for trying to help me. My step daughter knows someone who fixes computers so we are going to try and get him to have a look failing that Im going to admit defeat and chuck it away and save for a new one.

Hi Sorry to bump the thread back to the top of the list again, I finally have an update!

I started another thread the other day about my partner spilling a pint on his laptop and in all the panic we thought it was dead. We followed the steps and put it in a tub of rice and in the meantime managed to raise the £20 for the computer shop to look at this old laptop. We phoned today and they explained a Graphics chip had broke and I would need a new motherboard costing about £200. It got me thinking though the laptop is only 2 years old and I didnt feel it lasted a reasonable amount of time, I was thinking of writing a letter to see if I had any rights. Do Graphics chips just go on their own or could I have caused the problem somehow?

Thankfully the other laptop that had been doused in beer came on today and is working fine apart from a few keys but a new keyboard is a bit more affordable than a new laptop.

Huge thank you to you all for chipping in and giving me some great advice.

    Thanks

    Alison
