Replace the CMOS battery and then restore BIOS to default configuration. This will more than likely sort out the main battery/booting/charging issue, as basic power functions are set within the BIOS.

If this is correct, then it's not a simple hatch access, but a major strip down and mobo removal unfortunately:

yup, looks like it :( I did have a quick scan at the maintenance manual I linked to above, almost as bad as a HP...last one of those I did it was a full "mobo completely out of the casing"

And all that for a 50p battery change. Who designs these things?

Thanks everyone for your replies. I havent got a clue about the insides of laptops so I think Im probably best of taking it to PC World or somewhere to get repaired. I have replugged the battery in this morning and its strange because now its booting up normal and the time/date is fine. Its totally got me baffled!

    NNNOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!

find a local pc repair bod or two and get some quotes. DO NOT take it anywhere near P(erfectly)C(rap)World, bad service and rip-off prices...

...oh, and they'll wipe your hard drive and re-install windows whilst it's in there, then blame your motherboard whether it's duff or not, quoting in the region of £220 to "fix" it

This is probably because having run it without the battery in it, there's been enough trickle charge to give the CMOS battery a bit of a kick. Does it seem to be charging the main battery ok ??

Ok will defo stay well away from PC World! Thanks for the advice. Yes the main battery is charging fine now although my battery is a bit knackered now it only stays charged for about 15 mins as I always leave it in charging.
