We got married in our Town Hall. It was very grand, lovely stained glass windows, wooden seats - just like a church without the religious bits!0

Tricky one! I sympathise. OH wouldn't be that keen on a church wedding, whereas he knew that I wouldn't ever get married anywhere *but* my church in my home town. He is very kindly letting me have my own way on this, as it matters more to me than it does to him. :A
Just one thing though - did you not know each others' views on weddings before now? OH and I were well aware of each other's preferences way before we got engaged! I'm just curious, not criticising
- perhaps it's just never been discussed, even casually.
I think you can get a licence for a wedding ceremony if you want to have it in the paddock, no idea what it costs though. Does anyone know?
We discussed getting married but not the actual details of the day. He probably assumed i wanted the whole church thing etc and i assumed it wasn't really a big deal for him!!
I'm going to have to mull it over really!!Annual Grocery Budget £364.00/£1500
Debt payments 2012 £433.270 -
Please don't take this personally but a church wedding IS traditional.....for those who lead religious lives. The whole wording of the ceremony is about living your married life under Gods eye and living by his moral code, well surely if you don't believe in the fella then the whole thing is just a bit meaningless?
If he likes the look of the church then why not look for a de-commissioned chapel? There are quite a few around. There are absolutely hundreds of approved premises now that can conduct weddings, I am sure you could both find something you love.
Best of luck with your search
Very happily married on 10th April 2013

You also have very little say in the guest list etc, as again it the brides parents choice! All he has to traditional worry about is booking and paying for the honeymoon!
Is the above happening?!
Ah yes, you should definitely question how much of a traditionalist your intended is. The traditions dictate the bride wears white, and no nookie until you are man and wife.
Seriously, how about a civil ceremony in a historic approved premises, so you have the grandeur and sense of occasion of a church, immediately followed by a religious blessing at the same venue. That way you wouldn't have to say religious vows you're not comfortable with, but some religious words can be spoken by the vicar for your groom and guests to hear and enjoy.0 -
There is no point getting married in a church if neither of you is religious.
We got married in a church - my husband is not religious, but I am, and he had to attend pre-marriage classes with me
But if I wasn't a church-goer, I'd get married in an office, I think getting married in a church just because it's pretty/family is religious/for the sake of tradition is simply hypocritical and disrespectful. From Poland...with love.

Cant comment on for or against church vs registry office, as we got married abroad in an ice chapel!!

Yes, and my husband is Scottish Episcopalian (am I spelling it right?), not very religious though. He had to suffer through classes, poor thing, but fortunately the priest was young, laid back and really nice, so we both survived
