Church Vs. Registry Office

Day 1 of serious wedding planning was yesterday and we have come to our first hurdle.

OH wants a church wedding, I don't really. We are not religious, we don't go to church and it would be left to me to go on a sunday for however long it is so we could get married in one.

I don't know what to do!! I don't really want to give in an just let OH have his way - it's my day too.

He thinks Registry Office weddings are 'council house' - his words not mine! To be fair he's never even been to one! He thinks his family will dissaprove of a Registry Office wedding.

Any suggestions what i could do??

What about getting married at an approved premises, my OH originally wanted a church wedding but neither of us are religious so we agreed to get married at Preston Hall in stockton. It is more expensive to get married there as opposed to the registry office but now we are both happy.

Why don't you take him to have a look at your local registry office or town hall? Some of them are really nice buildings and he might change his mind if he's sees it in person

There are so many approved venues now that the options aren't simply church or registry office. Why not have a look and see what options are available near you; you may find somewhere that really suits you both. We are getting married at Edinburgh Zoo; the perfect place for 'us' :)
  • Have a look on you local council website as ours has a list of approved premises. We could get married where we are having our reception but that was going to be around £1500 as the pub charged £1000 to get married there and then you had to pay the registra around £450 but as Preston Hall is owned by the council it is only costing us about £400 (price is not yet set in stone as it is so far away). Of course it would only cost us about £50 to get married in the register office but hey like you said it's the OH day too.

Regards to price... Registry office will be cheaper. Plus side of a church is don't have to pay for registrars or give notice, but this is only if it is church of England. For Methodist/ baptist etc you have to pay to give notice anyway. I think the actually price of gettin married can be under £150!!
I am also getting married in an approved premise, it wasn't because either one of us wanted a church wedding, but because we wanted something special, and the registry office in the town just wasn't appealing to us.
The other option is a humanist ceremony for the guests, an a quick registry office bit before hand to get the legal bit out of the way.

  • We got married in the same venue as our wedding reception - it doesn't have to be a second building. Perhaps go and look around a local popular wedding venue and see what they offer?

Often people haven't realised how lovely other venues can be. IT might take some searching, but I imagine you will find somewhere lovely. I don't think of non religious weddings as 'council house', I think of them as repecting those who do attend church and believe in their God. I, personally don't, so have chosen a town hall. If I did attend a Church I think I would be annoyed at people using the Church to marry in if they didn't attend. Those are my thoughts though, but perhaps it may help your argument!

You can get married in a C of E church in England even if you do not attend it. You have to have some connection with the parish though. Born there, lived there, lived there as a kid, parent lives there etc.

I tried that arguement with him! It's what i think too. But apparently it's tradition to get married in a church
