Gingerbread House Kits

Hi All!!

Has anyone seen some cheap gingerbread house kits anywhere? Last year I got some Dr Oatker ones from Home Bargins, but nothing in there yet, and I cant afford to pay the £12 each that places like JOhn Lewis are selling!!

and I cant bake my own!
back to comping after a 2 year break!! Mission… to win a gift for all my family for Christmas!

I got one from lidl last year i think it was about £10
  • Ikea are selling them - just the houses for £2.50-£3.50 (can't remember the price, it's around that) With no icing or sweets to stick on.

There's a sign saying due to their popularity customers are restricted to only buying 5 each, although there were loads. I bought 2 last year and didn't get round to using them - their sell by date means they're good for a couple of years!! Will pull them out on the 1st. (And pray they're not all crumbled up.)
  • B*M was in yesterday whole stack of them £1.99

Gleek - I didn't know Sainsbury's were doing dough :) Thanks for that!

I know IKEA used to do dough too, but last year I did make my own and it was SCRUMMY! I used Kirsti's recipe from her "Kirsti's home made christmas" - and it was VERY easy and made LOADS!!!!! Best thing is I think you can freeze the dough so you don't have to use it all straight away :)

    ETA - it's Phil and Kirstie's perfect Christmas - ooops :)

    6 cups all-purpose flour (approx. 750g if a cup if 128g)
    1 tablespoon baking powder
    1 tablespoon ground ginger
    1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    1 teaspoon ground cloves
    1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup shortening, melted and cooled slightly (butter, 225g)
1 cup molasses (325g / 6 large tablespoons). You can also use golden syrup or treacle
    200g
    1/2 cup water
    1 egg
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract

It does make a huge batch so you might wanna halve it :)

I would recommend having a go at making one, you can make it pretty cheap and i (who is not an artist of any sort, though i do like baking) managed to make one a couple of weeks ago (as a practice) and was suprised by how easy it was and how much fun i had decorating it!

Plus you can scale it to any size you want. And im pleased to say it is still standing...well whats left of it anyway!

Its so much fun to see people picking which bits they want to eat first! :rotfl:

Anyway, here's the recipe i used, just incase, and ill add a link to the page i found because it has a template on it too.

    175g butter
    175g soft dark brown sugar
    3 tbsp golden syrup
700g plain flour, plus extra for dusting
    1½ tsp bicarbonate of soda
    2 tsp ground ginger
    2 tsp mixed spice
    1 tsp ground cinnamon
Zest and juice (about 50ml) of 1 orange
    2 medium free-range eggs

And here it is when i had first finshed it...
