I know someone else this happened to a few years ago.Several other people in the same area got caught out too.Although slightly different ,the tvs were empty casings,or didnt work. They were too embarassed to go to the Police. It was a known scam. This was a van on a pub carpark.I am sure if someone did some googling they would find it.I think there has been stuff on the tv about it
Dont all be so cynical-this is exactly how con artists work.
Thanks Antillmob for this-it might ring a bell one day and stop someone else getting conned(YES it relies on peoples greed and probably suspecting the item is stolen, but thats why its so hard to report).I think that people who buy hooky gear take a risk, but we can all make stupid mistakes-unless we read mse...0 -
This is real, the speaker scam goes on all the time round here.
My friend B**** fell foul of this, and he was basically intimidated into buying these speakers.
He was so embarrassed, but I eventually dragged him to the police, and he got his money back, as the police were well aware of the problem, and helped him approach the bank.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. There was a story about a year ago from Ireland that a consignment of glazed oven doors had gone missing, quickly followed by lots of people buying cheap flatscreen TVs that didn't work! Sounds a bit like this one....0

DjP wrote:Ahh the classic urban legends opening line - as famliar as a fairy tales 'once upon a time'
so this friend of a friend bought a £1500 telly for £400 ?
At that price - it was too good to be true ... and even a box with bricks in would be worth it at that price.
Never seen these - don't ALL shops just display the real thing ????
Hmmm, but then I forgot this was a fairy tale ...

Bit harsh that and unfair. Sometimes it's beneficial to read back through previous posts of a member before passing judgment.0 -

ok fair enough
but it still isn't true
it might be based on a true story - but it has been changed through the multiple telling ... hence the double/tripple distance the teller gives it ... it didn't happen to him/her ... or even his/her mum ... or even his/her mum's mate ... no it was his/her mum's mate's bloke ....
There's noway the criminal was in Tesco's - asking people to his van. If this was the case - then the OP would be telling us this 'story' about how dumb the criminal was.
Who buy's stolen TVs? Dodgy people.
Who buy's stolen TVs without checking they work ... or even that they are in the box? Stupid Dodgy people.
But even stupid dodgy people go to the police when Tesco's have full CCTV of the criminal and their Van.
Specially as there was no crime committed by the mum's mates bla bla ... as you can't be done for handling stolen goods - if you haven't got them ... unless the bricks were from the Berlin Wall?
No - afraid this isn't a true story.
Nice one though

My Dad's, cousin's, mate's, pet rabbit - was buying some hay from Pet Smart when a wolf said he had three bales of straw in his kennel - going cheap. The dad's, cousin's, mate's, pet rabbit - went to the wolfs kennel - there wasn't any straw - instead he got eaten. So if any of you are in Pet Smart and are approached by a wolf - please be warned this is a scam.0 -
This happened to my sisters boyfriend. He told me about it himself (I thought he was stupid and dodgy too). But of course you say it cant happen..must have dreamed it..A lot of stolen stuff is sold IN pubs, people dont usually say "please may I have a credit card receipt" or " I just want to do an electrical test before you scoot off in your kappa tracksuit"...:rolleyes:0

Yep happens in pubs all the time.
Not in Tescos though - ha ha ha
Thoguh who would ever spen £400 or £500 and believe what the fellow is saying ... as even if this did happen (which it didn't) the TV could be a year old and only worht £300 anyway

p.s. don't buy stolen gear - as it means you're encouraging burglary/theft - if it's too good to be true - and it is true - then it's stolen - so it isn't worth it0
