I'm wondering why you feel the need to advise on "their problem" then?

I think what I said is perfectly valid, I did not defend tesco, and brought to light that most retailers (esp online retailers in my experience) have done/ and still do it, and made the point that it always falls to the consumer to evaluate the value and the 'willing to pay' price,
I don't know about you but I've lived long enough to know that seeing a 'reduced' sign even if it says something like 'up to 90% off' vary rarely means any significant reductions and have now become unphased by the stupid 1p/5p reductions.

as I say if someone would actually buy a product purely because it has a reduced sticker then it really is their problem, and perhaps they should go get their buying-of-reduced-products compulsion seen to.

sorry for being a realist, perhaps it should be law that to display a reduced sign the product has to be a minimum of, what?, 10/20/30% price drop, perhaps that's just what we need more stupid laws dictating things like the curve of a banana and the minimum reduced sticker price.
people can make their own choices, if the new reduced price is a price you wouldn't want to pay, 1p or £100 just put it back, if no-one buys the products that have these stupid reductions perhaps the retailers will stop doing it.
  • Furthermore to my original post the crate of so-called reduced to clear toys has been removed at Tesco. Maybe other people complained about how misleading it was. It may be legal but it is very sneaky. Didn't mean to cause any arguments.
wins so far: 6 mars balls. 5 mars dvds. make up. hair stuff. moisturiser. Vodkat cocktail kit. 2books. 2 peroni coasters. 3 peroni bottle openers. john smiths shirt.face mask. so diary. Sky+hd and sky world.:j Mascara
  • Now I do understand what the op is saying but don't agree really. I couldn't care less about tesco or any of the super stores but I do care that people seem to have lost some common sense.
We as consumers need to be more aware and smart..If something says it is reduced then as long as something is taken off the starting price it is clearly reduced, it is only when they say reduced by xxx do you have a point if it is then not reduced that amount.
We need to be responsible for our own actions and spending and people should never take anything for granted, I shop with that in mind and will look at 2 for xx deals against normal price items and will also check the reduced section first but if I don't like the price I don't buy it..
I am not sure when we needed to be force feed so much and you can't blame a store for trying it on can you ? That is business and they are not a charity, they are there to make the shareholders profit.

  • Popped into tesco earlier noticed a crate full of toys with a big reduced to clear sign at the front. Started looking through the toys noticed that every single toy had the grand total of 1p off!!!!!!! the full price. Now I am not just talking about one or two but every single toy there were a fair few in the crate. This was also away from the normal toys.
I know some may say a reduction is a reduction but this was very misleading in the way in which it was done. I know about Tesco's dodgy pricing 1 for £1 2 for £3 etc reported on various posts but I think this was a dodgy price reduction too far and misleading.

    Every little helps:D

Tesco have done nothing wrong in this instance, a reduction is a reduction.

    .

What would be the point in having a forum if only posters who agree with the OP are allowed to post? Or if those who post have to apologise for disagreeing? I note that your 'rules' on how others should respond don't seem to apply to you...

    ROFLMAO.

If you managed to get that from what you quoted you have a unique and somewhat inverted grasp of the English language. :rotfl:

You seem to be confused about whether I was trying to be funny. I wasn't. But, never mind. Better luck next time.

Maybe we should set you up with a personal alert service because you do seem to have a lot more trouble understanding plain English than most here. ;)

Everyone in this thread who disagrees with the OP (I agree with the OP for the record) sounds exactly like a Tesco representative if they were asked about this. Obviously no law was broken with this offer and yes they are not Lying when they say reduced toys. But that doesn't change the fact that they are using the knowledge that people expect a 25% or more reduction when they see a 'reduced to clear' sign. Also putting this display by the door and away from other toys stops people from easily discovering the real reduction of only 1p. They are expecting people to pick up reduced items without a thought as to the saving as the 'know' its a big saving already.

    No this isn't illegal
No you can't complain about this to anyone and get any REAL response.
No Tesco can't get into trouble for this.

But is this really the issue? It has been discussed many times on this forum in other areas that the law is insufficient to protect consumers. People complain every day on this forum that laws should be stricter to stop companies (and people) getting away with the stuff they do. But suddenly Tesco are immune. They haven't broken any laws so lets tell the OP they are stupid and have a made a ridiculous comment.

Again I am forced to notice the arrogance of this forums members. When a OP gives an opinion that is contested they are treated like a moron walking in on a MENSA meeting.

How about if you don't agree you don't post? Or you post. sorry I don't agree.

Saying 'I dont see the issue' is one of the worst statements for this forum because you DO see the issue. Or at least you see what the OP is getting at, you may not agree but YOU DO UNDERSTAND ENGLISH and therefore you understand where the OP is coming from. So don't attempt to make your post stronger by pretending not to understand why the person has posted in the first place. Its stupid and only achieves to tell smarter posts that you are in fact an idiot who only uses this forum to increase the size of your EGO.

This is a public forum. You can't tell people what to post and to do so while 'shouting' in caps and calling people idiots is hypocritical. Rudeness is far more disruptive than debate and undermines your message.

They caught me out one Christmas many years ago. DD was about 8 i think and it was a few days after Christmas. At the back of the store was a huge display with reduced stickers all over it and everything was something like £2.00 an item. DD had Christmas money and filled a basket with bits and bobs.
When we got to the checkout most of it was actually still full price. Confused the checkout operator shouted a supervisor who told us that whilst yes, she agreed it was misleading by law (and it may have changed!) only 75% of what was on the reduced stand actually had to be reduced, so 25% of it was still full price. She said that she'd been dealing with the same issues all day and was annoyed as all of the items that were supposed 'reduced' were aimed at young kids and it had caused some tears.
We explained to DD that most of it had to go back, credit to the supervisor who felt sorry for her and told her to pick an item and she could have it for the £2. DD left happy.
Lesson learned there and I always check now.

Ours had a huge box of Blue Nose friends in the reduced section last week, no SEL. I scanned one and they came up a whole penny cheaper than usual. Needless to say they went back on the shelf.

I do see the point of the opening post, fake offers are sneaky, and a 1p reduction that is signposted as "Reduced to Clear" is misleading.

However, I don't think the people who are arguing against it are being rude. I don't agree that there is nothing wrong with this, but there is nothing wrong with the way those opinions have been expressed. Unlike the people aggressively having a problem with those that disagree.

We all have our failings, we're all ignorant about something. We shouldn't be made fun of over our failings, but neither should people have to ignore our failings or pretend that they're not failings. We should accept our share of the responsibility when we come a cropper due to our foolishness or ignorance, even if it is only a small share of responsibility. To do otherwise is incredibly rude, and many people understandably dislike such rudeness.

Our failings are not neutral character traits and being unashamed of them should not involve pretending they are.

People simply and flatly pointing out that a problem was caused by someone's foolishness, should be met by a sheepish admittance, not treated as if they've smugly put someone down.
