I'm a bit lost at your humour (if thats what it is supposed to be)

I assume the lack of any response to anything I said means you understand now that you were talking rubbish so we'll leave it there.

    ROFLMAO.

If you managed to get that from what you quoted you have a unique and somewhat inverted grasp of the English language. :rotfl:

It's a bit stupid I agree, but does anyone really buy things based on being told it is reduced, rather than thinking to themselves "is item x at price y a good deal?". If so it's probably a good thing they are getting ripped off, once they realise they might learn something.

I've seen this with all retailers esp internet ones, it's not illegal or misleading, but it is annoying, but ultimately it's always up to the consumer to check the value of something, we shouldn't complain that "there is only 1p off" but we should evaluate if the product is worth the price and if we need/want it,
if someone genuinely would just buy something just "cause it has a reduction" and not evaluate if it is worth the price they'd pay, that's their problem not mine.

The very term "ripped off" indicates it is never a "good thing".

I'm wondering why you feel the need to advise on "their problem" then?

I sometimes wonder if the people who defend this sort of thing have any sort of moral compass at all.

They seem to take the view that provided something is not actually illegal it's a perfectly acceptable way to behave.

There are two reasons why Tesco are wrong for doing this:

    1) It wastes people's time. If you are attracted to some display because you have been told that there is a reduction on something it's annoying to find the the reduction is completely insignificant.

    2) It may actually deceive people who expect Tesco to behave in an honest manner and think they are getting a bargain. Yes, they should check carefully but not everyone does and it only the smug and self righteous believe that just because they check it's perfectly acceptable to deceive others. A morally bankrupt philosophy, to say the least.

As others have said, that's very sneaky behaviour by Tesco. Not illegal or false advertising, but personally I would call it misleading. Misleading someone doesn't mean forcing them to buy anything but in this case Tesco are planting the idea in their head that it's good value when it's not. If they were going to buy the toy anyway then no harm done, but if they weren't and have gone to the bin because the toy is supposedly on sale then they have been misled.

You're right in that ultimately it's the customer's decision whether to buy or not but Tesco are clearly taking advantage of people in a rush ("Oh I need a present for my neice for tomorrow and those are on sale!") and gullible people, although of course Tesco aren't the only ones doing this by a long shot.

I put that sort of behaviour alongside clothing stores putting "1 and 1 free!" signs or similar on a rack of shirts and when you get to the till, only one style and colour of shirt is on offer and the rest aren't. I used to get this problem a lot with Uniqlo (I don't shop there anymore). Although it's not illegal and you wouldn't get anywhere with trading standards/false advertising with it I would vote with my wallet and simply not shop in stores that pull this kind of trick.
  • No one has been deceived. The sign doesn't say the amount of the reduction. If it said £5 off and was only 1p off then that would be a lie. As it is it's a bit cheeky and it was certainly nice of the OP to notify people so we are more aware of it, but people should check the labels anyway. If they think the item is worth the price with 1p off then they'll buy it, if not they don't have to.

And retailers have been knocking off 1p so you think you're getting a better deal for ages, why do you think so many items are something.99p instead of rounded up?

Everyone in this thread who disagrees with the OP (I agree with the OP for the record) sounds exactly like a Tesco representative if they were asked about this. Obviously no law was broken with this offer and yes they are not Lying when they say reduced toys. But that doesn't change the fact that they are using the knowledge that people expect a 25% or more reduction when they see a 'reduced to clear' sign. Also putting this display by the door and away from other toys stops people from easily discovering the real reduction of only 1p. They are expecting people to pick up reduced items without a thought as to the saving as the 'know' its a big saving already.

    No this isn't illegal
No you can't complain about this to anyone and get any REAL response.
No Tesco can't get into trouble for this.

But is this really the issue? It has been discussed many times on this forum in other areas that the law is insufficient to protect consumers. People complain every day on this forum that laws should be stricter to stop companies (and people) getting away with the stuff they do. But suddenly Tesco are immune. They haven't broken any laws so lets tell the OP they are stupid and have a made a ridiculous comment.

Again I am forced to notice the arrogance of this forums members. When a OP gives an opinion that is contested they are treated like a moron walking in on a MENSA meeting.

How about if you don't agree you don't post? Or you post. sorry I don't agree.

Saying 'I dont see the issue' is one of the worst statements for this forum because you DO see the issue. Or at least you see what the OP is getting at, you may not agree but YOU DO UNDERSTAND ENGLISH and therefore you understand where the OP is coming from. So don't attempt to make your post stronger by pretending not to understand why the person has posted in the first place. Its stupid and only achieves to tell smarter posts that you are in fact an idiot who only uses this forum to increase the size of your EGO.
