The frame was ok and stayed put - the problem I have found is with the cover. If any wind gets inside the house , it will damage the cover very easily.

I guess the wind gets underneath the cover. How about getting some strips of fabric ground cover (perhaps 30cm wide) and tape them around the bottom on both sides of the cover with duct tape or similar. Then, wrap the extended cover under the slabs. I guess the wind will just tear a hole on the cover itself!

A friend had this problem so we filled all the plastic tube with sand to give it some weight and taped all the joints together.

We then made some large U anchors (3 bits of wood screwed together) and bashed those into the ground to anchor the base. Its been fine since.
  • thanks all, great ideas. Looks like a lot of people have had trouble with these greenhouses.

I started my growing with a plastic greenhouse too..... just as yours has, it disintegrated after 2 years - I found another (complete) greenhouse for the same price as the covers (in Roys of wroxham) - so it is certainly worth keeping eyes open. :D

Also, I found all the 'extra' poles/joints/shelves etc, made new staging etc, i just made them to my own shapes! They are still useful as staging when you upgrade to your glasshouse, so it might be worth considering a complete one anyway??

PS: grow melon in the sunniest corner you have - i got 7 of the BEST melons ever from a 50p 'roadside' plant in my first greenhouse. You have to pollinate them yourself though - easy when you know how!

Which Roys was this in Angie? Dereham is our nearest one.

Don't know if this has been posted already.

The plastic covered greenhouse about 6x4 I think, is back in Morrisons @ £24.99.

They were £19.99 last year so it's up a fiver but still a good price compared to other places.
    I wish you......

    A moonbeam to charm you,
A sheltering angel, so nothing can harm you.

Hi i have never grown things before but yesterday i bought one of them 4 tier plastic greenhouses from wilkinsons (on offer at half price £9.99 ) i also bought 72 bussy lizzie plug plants today im going to re-pot them on into bigger pots was wondering if its ok to put them in the greenhouse or do i have to keep them indoors with them being plug plants?? Also is there anything i have to do to make them spread or do they just grow ok without touching them, i plan to fill my front boarder with them.
    many thanks

Buzy Lizzies are not frost hardy, but they'll be ok in your greenhouse during the day. In fact they'll probably need hardening off anyway. Just be sure to check the weather forecast and if a frost is threatened, bring them at night.
That's a good bargain you got yourself there.
My favourite thing to do with impatiens is to very carefully pick off a seed pod and hand it to someone. When they take it, the pod springs open in their hand, scattering the seed and giving the person a fright. Well, I never did say I'd grown up yet :)
