Caroline73 has given the most likely answer to your original query.

The money was available at the time the text was sent (or the internet bank query was made).
However, it was available to the first retailer who claimed it and this was someone whom you had not realised had not claimed their money before Lloyds sent the text.
If you had done a check on your on-line statement or obtained a ministatement from their Cashpoint machines you would have seen that something you had spent was still pending - assuming you keep a tight check on your smaller items of expenditure.

As to them letting you go into an overdraft position, you asked for the money and they provided it. Had it been a payment for car insurance which they had refused, leaving you driving but uninsured, you would be writing here complaining that they left you liable to prosecution.

That last paragraph is incorrect....they wont pay a direct debit if the money isn't there!! Its a basic account and if the money isn't there the direct debit is refused!

Also when items are pending that is why there is a difference between available balance and account balance - because of pending transactions!

  • But transactions do not become pending instantly.

When you say your account does not have an overdraft you must understand that this means an authorised overdraft. When YOU present your card for payment, the onus is on you to ensure the money is there. You cannot shift the blame to the banks.
  • Seriously you need to get a grip on this and fast else you will be repeating the same mistake over and over again without really understaninding why.

Not all pending transactions will be available to lloyds immediately - it is up to you to know exactly what is due to come out of your account not your bank - how would they know ?

So as has previously been explained keep a manual record of each and every transaction you make and for the most part ignore the balance displayed on the screen. Many years ago when things were tight for me I kept the slip for every card transaction I made and ticked them off my statements every month so that I knew what had gone through and what hadn't. At the beginning of every month I reconciled my statement so knew to the penny the balance available (usually pennies!) then added on my salary for that month, deducted all essentail bills as though they had already left the account (rent, c/tax etc). I then knew how much I had left for the month and only spent accordingly.

If you are on a tight budget this is the only way to go - these days you may be able to get free online tools that help you do this but for me it was a pen and paper !

So the advice for the future is to completely ignore balances on display and work it out for yourself.

Exactly my point - had it been a direct debit and they refused it, you would have been complaining about that.

As it is, they did not refuse your request for an unauthorised overdraft and that is wrong as well!

It's very hard for bankers to please the general public these days, it seems - no wonder they need huge pay rises and bonuses to deal with these problems.
  • Just to update and correct you all!!

I managed to get one of my drivers to drop some money into my bank at 3.10, 20 mins before the cut off! I then rang them to double check that the money had arrived and i would avoid the charge to which i was told yes i wont get charged. After i knew time wasn't an issue i then went on to ask the same questions i've asked here to be told that shouldn't have happened and to be told my text message service is out of sync and that has now been corrected, and any charge that may have occured had i not got the money in by 15.30 would have been wavered as it was their false information sent to me that caused it!

So next time when someone tells you it is not their fault and the information given led to the problem....try believing them before trying to make them feel like something you just stepped in!!!!!!!!!!!

    Lloyds TSB admit their mistakes!!!

I wouldn't actually because i know how much and when my DD's go out! I knew that any money available was not already spoken for in the way of DD's!

The problem was with Lloyds as they admitted their text service is out of sync!!

Which is what has been stated already and is normal for any bank (not really a Lloyds probelm). My advice still stands, please take heed if you wish to prevent this from happening again.
