I know what your saying, but what i want to know is why Lloyds had not updated my available balance correctly and allowed my card to go through even though it was obvious there was not an available balance despite 3 methods of checking said there was!:jEngaged 25/12/11 :j

So are you telling me you have never contacted ya bank to see if you have anything available for something that has slipped your mind?
Give over! I wish I'd never posted if all im going to get is replies like this that are no help with people who just do not understand what has been posted instead lets all jump on the bandwagon and turn it round! Do you all work for Lloyds or something?
And to add: this wasn't about my personal circumstances this was about the failure on the banks behalf to authorise a payment by a debit card that obviously should not have gone out!!! The payment should have been declined!!!!
As debit card accounts DO NOT update instantly I do not rely on checking them to see how much money I have to spend. It is up to the individual to take responsibility. Occasionally transactions have slipped my mind but by keeping my own records up to date and checked against the bank regularly, I get back on track quickly. But if does happen I accept that these are MY errors and suck it up.
No, I don't work for Lloyds.0 -

If thats the case...what is the point of an "available balance" if this is not what is available?!:jEngaged 25/12/11 :j

It's available at that point in time.If thats the case...what is the point of an "available balance" if this is not what is available?!
I think you'll find you've used your card somewhere and the retailer has been late earmarking/processing the transaction. Not an expert, but wonder if it's something to do with 'floor limits'?
If that's the case it's hardly LTSB's fault. They gave you the best information they had at the time.0 -
Unfortunately life isn't as simple as you like to claim.....
Why would i need to use my mobile phone to ring an 0845 number which will cost me the earth, when i have a text service from them, an internet banking account and a free app.....which unfortunately lloyds is at fault for giving the wrong information from, this is not my fault that the ways in which they allow us to check our accounts doesn't work correctly! And to add...this was not made aware to me until I find out today again by text from them that my account is now in a minus....this would not have happened had they displayed my account correctly, and also if they had not allowed a basic non overdraft account to go into the minus...isn't that the point of a debit card and account-that you can only spend what you have?!
As you stated...the opt out comes in to play! Again life isn't as simple as you claim! Over the course of a month my average week is 47 hours...this does not mean that my week is worked as 47 hours each week! I work 1 in 3 weekends, this means once every 3 weeks I work a 9 day straight without a day off! I do not get a day off in the week as you claim "i probably have 1 weekday free a week" - not the case!
And breaks...in my job my break is taken at my desk, im not in a position to leave the premesis so again...not a possibility
What i dont agree with is the fact that my bank offer all these ways to keep a check on your account, but then give you the wrong information, and allow you to spend more than you "actually" have available, and then charge me for the priviledge of there mistakes!
Like you say, 0845 numbers from a mobile will probably cost a bit. Mobile phones are very expensive toys, but if you check you will also see that the bank offers a geographic number too.
If you are in one of those really expensive contracts, then that will probably be part of your calling plan
See how life really is simple if you don't try to make it difficult.
(I'd still suggest you get legal advice on your working conditions - a a break should allow you to leave your desk!
But I can see why you may not take your phone to work with you if it doesn't work where you work! Maybe think about giving it up as it's not very good if it doesn't work where you appear to spend half your life! would probably save you a small fortune too so enough to buy those lil presents at special occasions

So at that time of me making the payment out of my account the amount was available, i can see what your saying but surely it wouldn't be requested to my bank in one day and not reflected in the available balance, it normally takes a few days to clear out of the account so my point is why was this not taken from my available balance before being taken from the account balance...
i hope that makes sense! Im not trying to be difficult just trying to understand:jEngaged 25/12/11 :j

Sometimes transactions with a retailer take a few days to go through to your bank. It is not instant.
My bank tells me it works like this. For instance, if you had £30 available on a Monday, you could 'spend' £10 in each of Boots, Tesco and Asda. The retailers would all check instantly that their £10 was available. Which it would be ok as you have £30.
On Tuesday boots and Tesco take their £10 each, leaving your available balance at £10. You owe that £10 to Asda. Asda take that money on Wednesday, you owed it because you spent it on Monday.
It's your responsibility to ensure that £10 stays in your account until Asda claim it. You cannot spend £10 at moonpig on tuesday just because it is showing as available. It's available for Asda to take a you promised it to them.0 -

No im not on an expensive tarriff with my mobile phone, but i can not warrant paying out for calls to an 0845 number, and surely the information available to me on internet banking, phone app and text from them would be the same from the phone call to them?
I never said the phone doesn't work at work? it was at work that received the text, accessed internet banking from the pc and my mobile phone app!
Im not trying to make my life difficult, all im trying to understand is why the bank would allow a payment from my account when there is not enough money to cover it and i have a basic account which has no overdraft facility!
Where i work, it has been this way for many years 4 n half of which i have worked here for, the job i do i have to be available the whole time im here, so i eat at my desk whilst i work etc
as i say im not trying to be difficult i just wanted to know why the bank allowed it to happen:jEngaged 25/12/11 :j

I understand all you said, and already was aware of this! I honestly thought i had calculated things correctly and that the available balance was correct for what had gone out of my account:jEngaged 25/12/11 :j
