Help computor only has 12% space!

 I need to know how to get my computor back up to speed.

I keep looking at files and not knowing if it is safe to delete, when I do take the plunge to remove something I get the warning about it affecting other programmes:mad: , so I leave alone.

What do I need to do to get it above 15% so I can at least defrag.
I would love to start from scratch but not sure how to save everything just in case it all goes wrong:eek:

have you emptied your recycle bin ?

also try the disk cleanup wizard ( start -> all programs -> accessories -> system tools -> disk cleanup )

When you say "files" to delete, are you talking about your own docs and pics or application files? If the latter then you should only really uninstall programs with the appropriate uninstaller or from add/remove programs.

Try getting rid of any programs you dont use. Also you could consider moving large files to a usb key or an external hdd

  • Both,

My main bugbear is my daughters Itunes, but she says they have to stay on computor or it deletes them from her I Pod which uses 2GB of space at least!

How big is the hard disc? Do you have any games installed?

Hello anyone no how to "defrag" please?
    thanks
  • I am not completely sure, if it is the main drive C then that is 9.54GB, we don't have any games installed. I inherited this computor from my dad several years ago, someone built it for him. We have had it revamped a few years ago and someone put windows XP on which is good but I am not sure of which programmes to safely get rid of.
