Wow !!! thank you so much, we are going to let the lap top rest tonight and try tomorow, at least she is a bit happier now knowing we can save her work , fingers crossed x
If it still won't work there are options using Linux Live distros to enable her to email the stuff too or Hirens Boot CD etc, Tell her to relax and don't spend too long in the Students Union Bar thursday

Assuming she saved her work to computer (rather than USB stick) the advice above still stands:-

Buy a USB caddy from maplin or PCworld e.g.
    http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/dynamode-2-5-sata-pata-hard-drive-enclosure-04931633-pdt.html
Then take out the hard drive from computer put in this caddy and read the document(s) from another computer

She MUST know a tech guy friend or at the university.

If desparate take it to PCworld but ensure THEY DO NOT OVERWRITE THE HARD DRIVE. Double/tripple check that with them.

EDIT: what appears after selecting F2? If its there you want to select "boot from hdd"
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

Morning mags, tell her to try this from the advanced boot options
Disable automatic restart on system failure

That should give her a blue screen (of death ie BSOD) with will give some info on the system error occurring, that may point us in the right direction.

  • Hi guys

Thank you so much, she has takin it into uni but apparently tech guys in there are not allowed to touch students pc's.
She is in floods off tears at the moment as her work has to be in on friday.
I have suggested to her to come home with lap top and then i will be able to follow your instructions, if that fails then i can take laptop into town tomorow and in the meantime she will have my laptop to try and do some work.

She will be home today and i will be at work but this evening if i have time ( wont get home untill 10pm ) i will follow the instructions you have kindly given me and post the outcome or it may be tomorow morning as i dont start work untill 1pm.

Appreciate your help and hope you will bear with me x thank you x

Sounds like you need to take this into an independant computer repairer, tell them the seriousness of the situation andsee what they can do. It will cost but if her work is that important, it will be worth it.

Another approach? Can she speak to her supervisor and ask them to raise it with the Uni's tech people - They can have a very different attitude when a request comes from a member of staff. Equally, with a deadline looming, they may give her an extension if she lets them know she has had tech problems in advance of the hand-in. :)

    Hi Mags1962,

I believe Debit Card is trying to see if the computer throw up an error code, as this may help in diagnosing the problem.

I am no means a computer expert, but just last week I sorted out a Laptop with the same sort of symptoms, except the computer just kept restarting once the user logged in.

To remedy this, I started the computer in safe mode (pressing F8 upon startup) then ran a virus scanner from a disk.

You would need another machine which has access to the internet to download the virus scanner program, create a disk. I downloaded a free scan program from the Kaspersky site. Just google 'Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool 2011'.

When I ran it, it found about 25 cases of mal/spyware. Restarted the machine and all was well.

I performed this on a machine that the owner wasn't too bothered about losing data, so I would exercise caution if using this method, otherwise just follow the advice of other posters or a professional.

    Hope this helps

Hi , the disabling restart will hopefully cause the BSOD which will give you some errors and a message, put the message on here and also the bits like
    STOP: 0xZZZZZZZZ (0xzzzzzzzzz,0xzzzzzzzzz,0xzzzzzzzzz,0xzzzzzzzz)
This will give a clue what the error is about. Also make sure she has no USB sticks etc plugged in .
Normally if windows gets a BSOD it reboots and often you don't get the chance to see the bsod, the disabling bit just stops windows from re-loading nothing else. Look here if you wish to know about bsod http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Screen_of_Death
