Advice needed-deodorant for 8 year old

  • DD1 started using deodorant at around the age of 7. Despite a healthy diet, a daily wash and clean uniform every day, she needed it (or rather it was for everyone else's benefit and to avoid name calling at school.) She was an early developer, our GP put it down to hormones.

DD2 is 10 and has only just started to wear it, on a very irregular basis. She's about 4 years behind DD1 in the smells department.

They both wear roll-ons, as DH & I do. They won't be offered aerosols for environmental reasons.

Just like many adults don't ever smell in the slightest, others sweat buckets and don't smell very fresh by lunchtime after their morning shower.
  • My younger DD needed to wear a deodorant from the age of about 8. She showers daily and has clean uniform every day, she is not overweight and is very active and fit, also had not started puberty in any noticeable way, but she definitely needed a deodorant. Now both DD's are older and prefer sure roll on, (the fast drying one)

It surprises me that many people seem to think that because their children are quite young that they don't need a deodorant when many quite blatantly do. My daughter was as clean as could be but still needed one, I would not go to work on a hot day without deodorant because I know if I became hot and sweaty I would be conscious of odour and I see no reason to make her feel the same despite the fact she was only 8. Older DD didnt need to wear one until she was in her teens. We are all different.

I would agree with some of the others. Pitrok works and has nothing in it that could be bad for you, afaik.

Pitrok aren't totally natural - I thought they were but they aint.

If you have evidence for that then I suggest you'd have a fantastic case to put forward to trading standards as they advertise the product as: 'PitROK Crystal Natural Deodorant' !!

There are other 100% natural deodorants on this site too http://www.alvinconnor.com/.... unless choille knows something about that brand that advertising regulators don't?!? ;)

I've used a crystal deodorant for about five years. It really works and I don't smell even on the hottest days.

Much better than rolling/spraying chemicals under your arms IMO.

  • Crystal Spring also make natural 'rock' deoderants which are also available as a spray as well - you can buy them in Holland and Barratt.
I've used the travel one daily for over a year now, as it lasts forever if you dry it off after use (you have to apply it to clean, damp armpits). Can't belive how economical it is, I work in a very warm building as well and haven't had any problems with it not working properly

I don't know how "safe" Pitrok is but don't be swayed by the word natural. SLS is derived from coconuts so could be construed as natural but the chemical information sheet for SLS definitely suggests it isn't safe.

It's just natural mineral salts isn't it? I remember reading about someone who used it then found out he could buy massive natural lumps of the stuff much cheaper and not from pitrok.

AFAIK, Pitrok crystal deodorant is 100% aluminium alum = natural mineral salts.

Aluminium alum is generally considered non-toxic, but not everyone agrees about that.

ETA: my mistake - it's ammonium alum which is also known as ammonium aluminium alum.

It should be what works for her - some work on different people and some work on others.

I abhorr the holier than thou attitude of 'it has to be something natural and why are you considering it she's only 8 and must be dirty'......

Kids are lethal to each other, it's important for your daughter that she doesn't smell, or perspire obviously in patches - you need to use whatever product prevents that exposure for her because it's not necessary.

I had one daughter who used deodarants early, and one that didn't - you work with the child you have and other people telling you that it must be due to this or that is irrelevant.

I think you are a superb parent addressing this - I have seen so many who refuse to allow their children deodrant or anti perspirant purely because of their age - it's so important to respond to what is happening for them regardless of when it happens.

My girls use vaseline, sure and dove mainly.
