My laptop, which I am looking at giving to hubby after treating myself, gets very hot, is there a way to clear the dust out without having to remove the keyboard? DG

It's the fan area that you need to clean out. Consult the manual from the Dell support site as to how to access it.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Lift what up closed? The lappy is never placed directly on my knee but either as at the moment sat on the desk connected to a screen/keyboard/mouse, or on a tray or laptop pad, so always letting air to it. BTW the desk is hot too now! DGMember #8 of the SKI-ers Club

if the vents are underneaths, tray's and desks don't give much airflow.
also look at what's running, if the processor is running in the 90's, it's going to get hot!!

Stick a Dyson (etc) nozzle on the fan inlet/outlet. If that doesn't help, as said above, read the Dell maintenance guide to remove/clean/put back fan(s).0

I have download and looked at the service manual, and while OK taking desktops apart/re-building, not very happy about taking the keyboard and screen off as it shows:eek::eek::o
Will try to Dyson!

A keyboard is easy to remove. You shouldn't normally have to take the screen out to access the fan and ducting on a laptop. It should be accessible from underneath. No free lunch, and no free laptop
