BT Total Broadband option 1 £17 per month

Other BT customers are only paying £13 a month for Option 2 broadband, so if you are content with Option 1 broadband, it will be less than that if you haggle!

Current equivalent BT package is about £13 (lowest BB package, including evening and weekend calls), plus line rental.
So plenty of negotiating room if you really want to stay with them (why would you though)?
Do a exchange search on www.samknows.com and look for your other LLU options.

That website gives these results for my LLU options (whatever that means!)

However, there is another service on your phone line (e.g. ADSL, LLU, DACS, etc) that would prevent you from ordering a new ADSL connection.

    Local Loop Unbundled.
So your LLU options are good: forgetting TT, you have both 02/Be and Sky available.
If you have an O2 mobile number to register, that's the one to consider. Or Sky if yu already have Sky TV.
Plusnet is non LLU. The £6.49 Plusnet Value tariff is capped at 10GB however.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    Thanks.

Don't have 02 or Sky I'm afraid. Daughter has Orange , that is available at £5 I think to Orange users could put it in her name. Is it any good? http://www.uswitch.com/broadband/buy/orange/?_cid=55501996

Sorry, don't undersatnd the implication of plusnet being non LLU, is it still an option?

I think I just have 10gb with my current BT Plan and it's been fine, never gone over.

Unlikely to get BT down to these price levels?

LLU means that the ISP's have their own kit in the relevant exchange and don't have to use BT's network or pay them the wholesale charges. So usually better and cheaper. Non LLU providers are just reselling the BT service. So yes, PN Value is a good economic option if you can live with the cap.
    Orange BB is dire.
Price up the options and then negotiate with BT. If you can't get the price you want, then switch.

Was just about to return here to post details of my conversation with BT.

BT have just offered my current Option 1 at £8 per month on a 12 month contract, instead of the £17.80 it would have cost me post-rise next month.

I think I am also going to do the pay upfront £120 line rental offer.

New monthly outlay for the next 12 months will be equivalent to £18 per month for line and BB as opposed to the £32.50 it would have cost from next month.

This may not be absolutely the cheapest/best deal available, but my BT BB service is very stable and I have no problems with it, as opposed to a leap into the unknown with a new provider and the fact that I don't have to mess around with a new router and all that stuff means on balance, for me, I am very satisfied.

Thank you all for sharing the info and for the encouragement!

    EDIT TO ADD.
Yes, TT is cancelled, despite the irksome Katrina-in-cancellations best attempts; she really really wanted to help me, she said and took a fair bit of umbridge that I was not receptive to her best efforts. Left me on hold for 4 minutes and wouldn't put the phone down at the end of the call........I presume so that I wouldn't be able to stay on to complete the customer service questionnaire. LOL
