  • Anyone else notice people often say "plug" when they mean "socket"?

As in "where's the plug?" when they're holding it!

Also when people say itch instead of scratch, "I itched it"

It's always been Mom to me for the last 25 years, I don't know anyone who says Mum or Mam.

I'd say a huge percentage of the Welsh population!

There is no "r" in latte. "Can I get a skinny lartay please?" It's latte.

I have a bigger cringe at adults who speak like toddlers - 'hospikal' instead of hospital and 'likkle' instead of little. Aaaagh!

    Big bugbear of mine.

    I'd say either 'i've teen a bottle' or 'i've brocht a bottle'. :)

Lots of dialects have stuff that doesn't make sense to people from outwith their area. We say a lot of things which would be deemed wrong, but I know the difference. I know how to say it correctly to someone who isn't local and I know how to write it down (I hope!)

Oh please, no, not outwith - you mean outside. My OH started saying outwith when he started visiting Scotland. He get's very firmly told off, it's not a word which travels south!

The only people Ive known to say Mom are Americans, because obviously thats what they say. And 1 person I know from Birmingham! Ive never understood why she uses the American word. Where are you from - its not Birmingham too is it?:rotfl:

Everyone I know says Mum. The only people I know who say Mam are Northerners.

Somebody I knew called her Mum, Mom. I think she was from Wolverhampton.

  • Oh crikey this has got me going! :rotfl:

    My most hated are:

    • Brought/bought (the original and best!!!)
    • Lend/borrow
    • Haitch
    • 'Of' instead of 'have'
    • I could care less (listen to what you're saying for goodness sake )
    • While I'm thinking American - why 'Erbs'????!!!!!!!!!!

    And my absolute number one:
Using 'been' and 'seen' instead of 'being' and 'seeing'. A friend of mine had as her Facebook status recently 'I love been a mummy' - sweet but aaaaaarrrggghhhh!!!!!:mad::mad: :rotfl:

Mine too it really annoys me it just so lazy, it makes me  when I hear it!

An old colleague of mine used to pronounce it 'itch' used to bug me, she is now a deputy head teacher, I wonder if she was ever corrected when she was doing her teacher training?!

:rotfl::rotfl:I live just a few miles away from 'the broch' and rarely understand what they are saying (and I've lived here all my life but parents aren't locals, not sure if that makes a difference), wen I was at college one of the girls said she was getting the pinters in, shhe meant the painters! Oh and she was going tenting for her holidays I mean wth!!!! :rotfl:

Bad grammer and bad spelling really bugs me!

If you've 'got the pinters (painters) in' it can also mean that you're on your period. :rotfl:
