  • He did say about paying a bill each month until I told him how much they were !!! There are 4 in the house, I have a 12 year old daughter and my son has xbox, playstation, stereo, ipod, tv etc in his room, and most left on when he goes out !!
  • oh he earn £40 a week so 25% would be £10 but the grant he is getting is over £1000, should he pay a percentage of that too as he says no :(
  • after my long rant........."Gothicfairy"'s posts are both good ones. And if you are going to show him this....................

YOU DO NOT NEED AN APPLE MAC - if this "laptop" is only for Uni, and not for personal "youtube/facebook/twitter/or other torrent sites" use, you can get one for £200 that will allow you to use MS Office to prepare your coursework.
CHECK UNI NOTICE BOARDS FOR 2nd HAND BOOKS and sell them when you've finished with them
YOUR MUM IS NOT A BAD PARENT - you, however need to realise we live in a world where nothing is for free. You want to be an adult, start acting like one

    hope that helps!!!!

IF and only IF, he is going to put that £1000 to funding books etc, then i would say no - they can be very expensive, even 2nd hand ones. but if he is using it to fund his partying lifestyle then i would say yes!!

dont get me wrong, part of being a student is enjoying the social life - so i wouldn't say there is anything wrong with him using a small amount to have fun, but blowing the lot on alcohol and tatoos is unacceptable!

sometimes moving out into student accomodation can be the eye opener they need. not paying your elec bill one month means studying with a torch!! you soon learn where the priorities are!

if all else fails, remove the fuse from all the plugs in his room!!

You can continue claiming CB and CTC until your son turns 20, not 19.

    Stop feeding him.

    Stop washing his clothes

    Stop ironing for him

Cut off the internet to his room

Don't pay his mobile phone bills.

Have a meeting with him and explain he is now an adult and to live here he will pay £x per week, or he can move out and hand him the local papers with flat shares in them and let him see the cost.

    Don't be soft on him.

I was just going to say what ONW said! Provided your son enrolls on the course while he's still 18, you can carry on claiming CB and CTC for him until his 20th birthday.

Regardless of this, and especially if you are on a tight budget, I'd start making him very aware that the time for him to support himself is fast approaching.
  • apparently the course he is on means he doesnt qualify so it will stop when he is 19
