    Avast ye hearty , or maybe the Avira try the speed check in safe mode(with networking) on each it may be the A/V but never known it to make that much difference. And another thing to try is is your router running in 802.11n 802.11g 802.11b or mixed mode some cards are pernickety about mixed mode. (which router have you ?)
    Hi Guys, Thanks for replies. I,m using speedtouch router/thomson..had it 2-3 years... don,t know a great deal about them as such., so what you and gunjack just advised went over my head ;;a bit;;
    How do I check modes? and G as Gunjack mentioned? IF it,s A/v , would changing A/v,s be advisable, I like Avast, picked up 2 threats in last couple of weeks, unless they were false positives???most unusual;but good;;;:
    Any chance you can dilute your info for a numbskull like me?:o
    My speed is up and down like a yoyo, more down than up...very rare to get a 4mbs,;;;Without appearing thick, wouldn,t changing router settings affect both pc,s or are the settings in my pc???:beer: UPDATE:::
    JUst ran speedtest in Safemode, not much change really...3.1;;;2.5;;;0.6 3.2;;;;different time of day than others, that can alter speeds can,t it ?

    G standard refers to wireles standards, 802.11a, .11b, .11g and .11n It refers to the speed of data transfer between the router and the wifi device (in this case, your laptops). Your laptops will definitely be capable of G standard (up to 54Mb/s), they may or may not be capable of b(11 Mb/s) or n (up to 270 Mb/s).

    So, most routers by default are set to operate in mixed (i.e. a mix of 11b/11g or, if capable, 11g/11n or 11b/11g/11n) mode. What we are suggesting to you is you log into the router's web-based interface and change the wifi mode setting to operate on 11g only, then re-try your speedtests.

    thomsons are usually IP address 192.168.1.254, but if you post the model number you can be advised definitively :)

    Don't be concerned with changing anti-virus prog at this stage....my observations above were relating to ping times, not bb speeds
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

    I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

    open a browser, and type the 192.168.1.254 into the address bar and <enter>.

    usernam is probably Admin, and the pasword should be left blank

    ^^^ so you're in the right area :) there should be a (usually) drop-down list of options to change the b/g to g only, do this, then save changes and log out. You may need to reboot the router for it to take effect.
