re-speed

Options
Hi, I had my daughters laptop yesterday to try and see if my printer was faulty, or pc.;;It seems it must be printer, as I had same trouble trying to load it on hers as mine, I have posted this before..
The thing I noticed most was the speed of hers, compared to mine;
Hers was twice as fast. I was getting 2.4/2.1/1.7 and hers registered 4.7/4.7/4.1 trying alternate speed test on each pc..thinkbroadband speedtest.
Mine is 2.5 year old acer aspire , hers is a dell, both dual core processors, intel centrino, both vista...I have thought for ages that AOL were playing silly beggars with me because I haven,t renewed my contract, but still with them....But it can,t be, because she using my router/aol same.just piggy backing.
Can anyone tell me why mine should be so much slower than hers, they are similar age. I,have just restored mine back to factory settings, 2 months ago, and have less things on mine than hers.
Any help would be grateful.

how close to the router was you when doing the tests?
or are you doing via ethernet cable?
are you using them in the same place or different rooms?
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)
  • To compare them both you should try and make everything the same, as far as possible.
i.e. no other downloads in the background, same cables etc :D

Hi gonzo, they were both side by side, both wire less, and both in seperate room from router, getting excellent signals. approx 5 metres from router, with wall between... but both were identical, and I tested alternately, because, as you know, you cannot use seem speed tester for two pc,s at same time, same ip address... I found that out during the test, didn,t know before.could have tried different testers, but that would defeat the object... I tried pressing start test both at same time, that,s when it told me of IP address; control conditions were identical. with tests carried out a second after first one finished, no lag as such

update,,, Just out of curiosity I have just run same test as yesterday, unfortunately daughters has gone back. However, using Chrome, as did on both yesterday, I have had 3 tests done one directly following the other, the last one yesterday on mine was 1.7, and daughters 4.1, today, 1.3/3.5/2.3 regularly drops to 0.5/0.4 BT said ages ago my house would get no more than 4mbs ,copper and about 1 mile from exchange as crow flies.
  • Lots of things can cause speed issues with your PC. The most worrying would be any nasty viruses on there, so if you have Internet Security, run a virus scan. If you don't have any, get some! There are plenty of free Security Suites on the web, and sometimes your broadband provider supplies a free 12 month trial.
Other things can use up a lot of bandwidth that you may not even be thinking about. For example, if you run a file sharing program on your PC like UTorrent or Limewire, you may be constantly uploading files without realising it. Even programs like BBC iPlayer can cause a problem, if your speeds are pretty low to start with. So it's maybe worth checking all the files on your PC and if you do use a file sharing program, maybe it would be better for you to download files directly from the internet sites.
If you're connecting wirelessly, the speed can be reduced depending on how many devices are connected to the network and are in use. So if every member of your household owns an iPhone or android and are constantly connected to the wifi, you have 2 people on 2 laptops and someone playing on XBOX Live, your speed would be significantly worse!
Please help to make people Endometriosis aware!

:T Expecting my first LO on July 12th; words fail to describe how grateful we are for this gift :T

Hi ginger, As i stated, only my pc and my daughters pc were on, both using nothing.
No programs etc running, only the speedtest ones. Both were exactly the same conditions, side by side. My pc is clean and fully secured with avast, malwarebytes, spybot. daughters is the same, except she uses avira...the doubling of her speed to mine in same conditions, and similar spec, is my machine is either under performing, or something else is slowing it down, but if it,s not infected. Even ran eset online , no virus found....bit puzzling. thanks anyway

Avast ye hearty , or maybe the Avira try the speed check in safe mode(with networking) on each it may be the A/V but never known it to make that much difference. And another thing to try is is your router running in 802.11n 802.11g 802.11b or mixed mode some cards are pernickety about mixed mode. (which router have you ?)

the only difference between avast & avira is usually slightly better ping times with avira - you may recall I tested them on the same rig here on several occasions. Vista dynamically tweaks TCP/RWIN settings, so shouldn't be that....try locking your router to G standard only, and make sure your MTU in the router is set to 1500...
