Because you haven't granted it Internet Zone access in Firewall, Zones.

Espresso is absolutely right. I had the same problem last week with ZA before someone on here told me to add my router to the Trusted Zones. I've not had the problem since.

Software firewall surely is an optional (unnecessary?)extra if like me your broadband connection is sent to a router with a hardware firewall

No need to install multiple spyware / malware apps as good online scanning available at http://www.ewido.net/en/ to provide a second scan

Not true, as it will only protect from inbound attacks unlike a software firewall.

What other sort of attack is there apart from inbound ?:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

If I wanted to control which apps etc had network access then I could install a software firewall as well

Spyware type apps which send your personal info back to their servers etc. Why risk this, when you can have a software firewall running quietly in the background?

Trojans, key loggers etc... trying to phone home, send sensitive data back etc...

PC's that are being used to send spam etc...

Safety in layers. And different layers at that. A software and hardware firewall configuration is very effective. Plus a good software firewall (like Kerio) doesn't have too large a footprint on system resources, especially in comparison to how effective it is.
