No more decorating today but have organised a man to come and price up carpet for stairs and landing tomorrow. My dad is helpfully coming tomorrow to fit new bath panel.
Slowly but surely this house is coming together :D

The end is in sight. Aside from last few tweaks and a ruddy good clean :o house is ready. Valuations book for next week :D:D
Here's hoping for a speedy and trouble free house sale and purchase down south.

Sadly more money about to be spent on Luna the lab. Three days she's been sick so off to vets tomorrow. As if having to go to vets after eating poisonous berries at half term in October wasn't enough......

  • Wow. 10 months since I last posted on this thread :o must do better.

In good news house sold (but still took 6 months to secure a sale) and we purchased a lovely house in more leafy Wiltshire. We have been here three weeks and I love it :D
However I completely fell off the Old Style way of living and frugality. Meh. It just went out the window :o Have been a bit too free and easy with the old debit card at the supermarket as well :o

I no longer have the excuse of H's long commute for lack of proper cooking so it's back to basics for me. Meal planning. Shopping for bargains. Cooking from scratch. Deciding when purchases are a want instead of need. Although H earns more money than before we have a total mare over last year with cars keep breaking down and it's eaten into funds originally meant for house. I want to work up on building a good stash of savings and saving for Christmas and birthdays.

I am slowly getting my groove back, sit here munching on HM pizza which will be followed by HM choc pud and choc sauce. OK the beer I am drinking (left over from summer hols to Devon this year) is bought but I draw the line at home brewing ;)

We haven't yet started any major redecoration yet. I am planning on revamping our tired but still in good nick bedroom furniture. Trying to source via auction sites another chest of drawers to add to it. Then it will be time to break out the sander and get going.
New sofa has to be purchased but considering the current one is 16 years old I think we've had our money's worth from it :)
H is embracing the make do and mend side of life and isn't turning his nose up at the idea of second hand furniture :T local town has a nice second hand furniture shop and whilst I haven't seen anything yet I will keep an yet out for anything that might suit our needs eg need a blanket box to store fleece blankets we use in winter. Was out sniped on eb*y for one but I will carry on the search.

All in all feel pretty good :D not being smug just counting my blessings and being appreciative for what I have.

  • Good luck Bitsy!
It sounds like you are back on track!

Are you good at upcycling old furniture? Is it difficult?

I am thinking of rehoming some furniture from my grandmother's house, before my mum and uncle sell the house... a wardrobe, dressing table and chest of drawers. All the drawers are a little stiff. They have ornate brass handles, with little keyholes. The wardrobe is lovely too. All solid wood, no woodworm that I have spotted... I was thinking of sanding them and either refinishing or painting them in the French style... obviously I have NEVER done anything like this before...!!!

I've never up cycled a piece of furniture in my life! However I wasn't planning anything too fancy, some chalk paint and a bit of wax. There are loads of Youtube videos and blogs so I thought I would just give it a go.

    Your furniture sounds lovely :D

  • Thanks Bitsy! I must look up some of those videos...
I do love painted furniture! Am a bit worried though that if I painted them I might regret it! Would it just be a case of sanding the paint off again later on, if I changed my mind, do you think? Or would they be ruined?
Having visions of Annie Sloan paint... maybe I will go for a snoop on YouTube!

I guess if you changed your mind sanding would work unless you're using say a gloss in which case maybe nitromors or heat gun would be better to scrape it off.

Have sat making a list of store cupboard ingredients I want to build a stash of. Sadly new house doesn't have a pantry unless you count a wall cupboard in utility room but I thought I might commandeer a corner in the much larger garage. It can't ALL be a man cave ;) I will break the news gently to H at the opportune moment :rotfl:
