The law requires them to impound cars showing as uninsured unless the driver can prove there and then that it is.

Sure about that? - I got pulled over last year up north on the M55 for no insurance. I'd done the insurance over the phone that day but it wasn't on the MID.

Plod gave me a very hard time, questioned everything (repeatedly). Accused me of lying and all sorts until I drummed my answers into his head and explained everything in tiny little steps for him to understand.

By the time I was done with him he was demanding I get out of his car :rotfl: He told me to **** off when I asked for a receipt for being tugged but said he'd be in touch after making enquiries with the MID. I stood in front of his car and refused to budge without the receipt for being tugged. Needless to say he told me to f/off again or he'd do ME for wasting HIS time lol.

Short story? - I continued driving my car home and I had no physical proof that I was insured just facts.

    Likewise.

Got stopped on a bike because the insurance had one digit wrong.

We established what the issue was and the insurer agreed to go over the tape as I was adamant that they were given the right reg number. They said if I had then I was insured. I was given a producer and the traditional seven days to show a certificate. Having checked the tape it was their error so they sent a letter to the cops saying I was insured. No impound, no fine etc.

I have just (a couple of weeks ago) changed the registration number on my car.

The process is very straight forward ... when you receive the V948 Number Plate Authorisation Certificate, together with a new tax disc that has the new reg number, you then go to have the plates made up.

Then, you phone your insurer to agree a date when you will put the new plates on the car. If you give the insurer a few days, then you can be sure that the new insurance certificate has arrived before the agreed date and the MID will also have been updated, then, on that agreed date, you can safely change the plates over, put the new tax disc in the screen and destroy the old tax disc.

This way, you have no worries about the police stopping you because the MID will be up to date.

Personally, I checked the MID before I drove the car with the new registration plates ;)

I do find it a little difficult to understand why you would not know 100% for sure if you had informed the insurance company or not, it is a fairly rare and memorable conversation. However, benefit of doubt... since you said you arranged two plate transfers at the same time and your's had been changed okay, then maybe the change for the business insurance for the van went wrong at the insurer.

At least you can swear back now.
But you'll be fitted up for something else now if you do though.

A public admittance of corruption in the police service if ever I've seen one!

I have already asked them to put it in writing, but they said they wouldn't at this time? as the policy documents stating that it was a mid term change, should cover us? They have said to go back to them if this isn't enough, and have also said they would confirm to the police that we were insured, should they ring them.
I'm just worried that the police officer told us insurance companies are reluctant to put things in writing incase they are then proved to be at fault? The insurance company can't tell me we were covered over the phone, but then go back on it can they? I have spoken to 3 different people who all told me we were covered, but their lack of willingness to send me a letter confirming this straight away, worries me.

What I usually do in cases like this is to record the phone call. If you google Rectel, you can record the call and then save it to your computer. You then have it for future reference. I also always ask for the full name of the person I am speaking to and record this along with the date and time of the call.
