Another big thanks! I had actually already downloaded that via SlimDriver as recognised the interface but it must have had a problem somewhere along the line as it didn't work before and now it does!

    One last Q...

When I was re-installing windows I didn't really know what I was doing and made a partition of 8mb (because when it deleted the previous copy it looked like there was a separate 8mb partition so was trying to copy previous settings). Anyway, it seems that all the Windows stuff is now on what's called the D drive and there is a small C drive which is empty apart from the broadband folder that somehow installed on it. Will this cause any problems and is there any way to change it?

not what you want to hear, wiping both partitions and reinstalling will change it :),

How to change drive letter assignments in Windows XP

Probably runs faster than before. Though you might wish to splash out on more RAM and install Avast 6 Free

closed - I'm definitely not re-installing, it's taken me hours and hours to get this sorted!

I've just been reading it's best not to mess around with naming the C drive. Will it be OK to leave it as it is? Will any programs get 'confused' that the main drive is the D drive not the C drive?

I've already downloaded the latest Avast and will mention to the person I'm giving it to about the RAM. Is that link the exact one it would need, very cheap if it is!

give the disc to the new owner then.

elapsed time for a reinstall might be an hour, but actual effort of a windows reinstall is about 3 minutes, now you know where the drivers are, the rest is waiting for it to complete, which doesn't need watching

  • The new owner is definitely not capable of a reinstall! The driver process took ages as SlimDriver does each driver separately requiring lots of 'click next' click install' 'click finish' etc and restarted after each one. I'd also be really nervous that I wouldn't get it all working again - I can't believe I managed it this time round!

I'm happy to leave the main drive as D as long as it won't cause any issues!

    Yes, that's the exact one.

I don't know if there will be problems with having a non-standard drive letter.

You don't need Slim Drivers, you can use the Drivers from the Gigabyte link. So a reinstall will take you much less time than the first.

Don't worry, you can do it.
  • If I were to brave it again I take it I just need to NOT make that small partition and then the one that is made will automatically be C?
