    Firefox + Spybot + Adaware + M$ Spyware Beta + router = good security + fast machines.

I've not had any anti-virus installed for over one year now, all I get are some cookies but nothing that slows my p.c/connection down.

Routers are getting cheaper and cheaper, mine cost about £30 and saved me the need for anti-virus software that slows and hogs memory.

Most modern routers have NAT (network address translation) which basically means a 'firewall'. Most routers also have the function for SPI (stateful packet inspection) which monitors the network traffic before it reaches your P.C

Also, try set 2 email acounts up. One for important 'secure' information for ordering online - this should be the email acount supplied by your Internet service provider. Choose another email acount with MSN/YAHOO/GMAIL for junky stuff 'spam' this reduces the chances of recieving a virus through email.
