Laughable isn't it? Margaret Thatcher! The one responsible for wrecking the entire social fabric of the country, destroying all the manufacturing jobs, deregulating the financial sector, creating the 'me me me' society, stating that 'there's no such thing as society', wrecking the NHS, causing the poll tax riots, and making the royal 'we are a grandmother' statement...............
I could go on, but what's the point?
Amazing how many posts there are online from people wanting to dance on her grave, and even talking of setting up coach trips! Then there's this stirring song:
John McCullagh - I'll Dance On Your Grave Mrs Thatcher

John McCullagh - I'll Dance On Your Grave Mrs Thatcher
I was going to sign the "no state funeral" petition for Thatcher but how else would we make sure she was really dead? Twenty-one gun salute, each barrel pointed at the coffin, right?
And for political humour balance...
A Soviet judge was leaving the courthouse in a fit of laughter. A worker passed by and asked him, "What's so funny, judge?" Judge replies, "I've just heard the most hilarious joke about the Party." The bright-eyed worker pleads, "Please, what was the joke?" The expression on the judge's face changes: "I can't say - I've just sentenced a man for telling it!"
You knew where you were and who hated you in the '80s...0 -
Wow, so relieved to read the majority of the posts on this topic. Thatcher and Reagan were the idiots that changed the regulations and let the banks get us into the mess we're in now. Made a quick buck at the time but the longer term effects have now hit home. I also believe that if the UK breaks up then Mrs Thatcher will take the bulk of the responsibility for that one as well. Never a 'national' leader in a million years.0

Well, at least the poll result answers a lot of questions about some of the people who post on this forum. Those who want it all now and don't care who else pays. There's going to be some serious grief on the debt-free wannabe forum over the next few years.
Thatcher indeed ! :eek:Warning: In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

There's a marked difference between "I want it all now and don't care who pays" and "Maybe gutting the welfare state and screwing over the poor wasn't such a sharp idea, and maybe selling off all our public utilities at a p*ss-cheap price to be run for a profit then sold to foreign companies wasn't in hindsight the most superb idea, and perhaps allowing people to similarly buy all our public housing stock at a knockdown price and not allowing the proceeds to be spent on building more was a bit of a stupid thing to do, oh and as for deregulating transport, commercial television, financial services..."
And now we have Cameron and Gideon doing it all over again, but now we haven't got anything left to sell off. Except the NHS...urs sinserly,

More than 20 years after her colleagues booted her out, and more than 30 after they first started promising to do so - and these actions were because she was the most unpopular Prime Minister in history - she has become the most popular Prime Minister in history?
Perhaps if her unpopularity hadn't been repaired by the Falklands War campaign, she wouldn't have survived the trebling of unemployment and doubling of inflation and the city centre riots, and the consequential loss of confidence of the electorate and her party, and she wouldn't be considered for this dubious honour.
More than a third of the electorate has changed since she left office, so one wonders to what extent a 60% result is something to do with false memory syndrome, or even fake multiple voting, or perhaps that loads of people who didn't have a strong favourite looked at this and never bothered to vote, like me.
I can think of no better recommendation than read this article by William Keegan in the Observer a few years ago, which deconstructs the myths of Thatcherism more eloquently and in more detail than most of us could, starting with the nonsense of the false attribution of inspiration for her inaugural speech, and including that privatisation was not even mentioned in the 1979 manifesto, but thought up later as a response to the poor economic situation.
