  • Owain Moneysaver,

I also thought she would get contribution based JSA if she is only working 14 hours a week. But it seems this is not the case. She was told that it is also related to income, and therefore she is not entitled. She is earning around £160 a week (14 hours)
  • Does anyone know why they have removed all the newspapers from the JCP waiting area? You used to be able to look through the jobs sections in all the local papers while you waited but they are not there anymore.

Not read the full thread so apologies if this is a repeat.
When she goes and they try to make her do a job search, she has the right to say she wants to/is doing then herself in her own time.
When she lists the jobs applied for/cv's sent off on the little form they give out, just be vague with what she writes. They have no right to contact the companies to see if she really has applied.
Edit. I was on the contribution based for a while, where its only national insurance thats paid and its not worth the effort. Paid more in petrol to sign on. Would not bother next time unless it affected something else too.

That is a disgraceful thng to say. You are not a man of this world, or if you are you wear blinkers.

I dont think its a disgraceful thing to say at all, why do you say that, a job is a job. Surely going for a receptionist or any other job is better than lounging on the dole till a job which she thinks she wants comes along, it could be donkeys.

What is the OPs daughter going to do with just dole money.

In a few monhts the mother will be complaining that the daughter isnt paying any board money or very little because she couldnt lower her sights and get any job to pay her own way.

Earlier on in my life Ive gutted chickens and picked taties on my hands and knees among other things to pay my way and bring up my kids.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Those are your thoughts but i am, i use the jobcentre daily and the staff aren't there to get you a job, if they give you a job to apply for apply for it, as this can lead to benefit being sanctioned.

The OP did say her daughter wanted to work in the same industry again but with todays job market nearly every industry is highly competitive so limiting yourself to one industry when you may have transferable skills is quite frankly foolish for the time being.

I do have a certain amount of sympathy for jobcentre staff when most of the customers who they see are for all sense of the word hopeless causes.
  • McKneff,

As you will see in my original post - I can understand the issue if she had been out of work for 2 months or more. But it has been 2 weeks!
I get the feeling that they are just putting pressure on her to take the first thing that comes along so that they can get her off the records. She spent 4 years at college to get her diploma - should she really be expected to give it all up after 2 weeks?

Wy is it disgraceful, i wa sout of work for 5 months and hadnt had much luck in job offers and when i wa soffered a job i took as it meant id be working and earning my own money rather than on the dole.

The daughter can apply for other jobs out of the tourism sector and get an offer and continue looking for something in tourism.

Harry hill trained as a doctor, yet he is annoying everyone on a saturday night, somehow wish he had stuck to being a doctor myself, but goes to show that not everything you trained and studied for is where you end up doing.
  • So what ever happened to career choice? My daughter has previously won a National and regional Travel and Tourism award for salesperson of the year! Should she really be expected to give this all up within 2 weeks of finding herself made redundant?

Would you expect an out of work Doctor to go stack shelves if he is unable to find work after 2 weeks?

You are right that someone can claim if they are working fewer than 16 hours a week but, as you will realise, the £160 she is earning is far more than JSA so that would reduce any payment due to zero.

In fact, if she is earning £160/week, she would be paying NI contributions herself would she not? In that case, I don't see the point in signing on at all.
