Can i cancel my contract? Help!

Hi there, im currently on maternity leave and my partners hours have gone from full time (40) down to 16 hours due to the business having to cut back and unable to give him full time hours. My problem is our mobile contracts, we have a year left from next month and due to our situation we are struggling very much to pay rent, bills etc. Does anyone know if i can cancel the contracts? Thank you. :(

    Yes.

You will just have to pay the remaining 12 months contract in one go. I believe some networks may deduct some of the VAT if you do this.

Not what you wanted to hear I suspect.

Are the handsets locked or unlocked? Can they be easily unlocked?

If the are/can be unlocked, sell them on eBay unlocked and use the money towards paying the contracts off.

  • You will have to pay up in full what you can try and do is request it downgraded to the lowest tariff though.
  • Hello thank you, not quite what i wanted to hear, my partner thought that might be the case. As money is very tight that might be a little hard, but yes i can easily get them unlocked. Thank you.
  • Hello thank you for that, i never even thought about that.
  • Have you contacted your network about this at all?

All networks will have a specific department that'll deal with debt etc., what might be a possibility would be to go to the Citizens Advice Bureau, work with them to produce a statement of means then send that to the network to prove you can't afford it and see if they have any other options. You will need to speak to customer services first and see if they have any sort of debt assistance department you can speak to for advice to provide you with details of what exactly they want, but it's that or pay off the rest of the contract.

It is worth saying that all these actions, even if successful, are likely result in defaults recorded in the credit files.

it might be worth asking if you can downgrade your contracts to a cheaper one then try and sell the phones to raise as much towards the rest of the contract as possible.

No. It's not the mobile networks fault you circumstances have changed.

I dont think the OP is suggesting that it is the networks fault - its not like they've willing run up a huge bill they dont want to pay.
  • Some companies offer temporary disconnections. It wont cancel your account but may give you a break for a few months... Which network are you on?
