I am very torn about this - I do want to strike but it will impact patients - especially one person that day.

Of course you can, but what is the point of ballots if you take part and then ignore the outcome.
If you really want to show solidarity you would accept the result of the ballot. You could ask your union if you can join the picket (numbers are limited) but I cannot think any union would accept the help of a member who had ignored the strike. Have you any idea what a picket is for? Its to persuade in a lawful manner those who are not striking. You would have to be a real hypocrit to try and persuade someone to strike when you do not have the inclination to do it yourself.
Indeed, I am a hypocrit on some levels - I do support that the pension changes should be managed in a different way but I do not want to impact on my patient.

If you speak to your union reps you will discover that anyone doing a critical front line job will be encouraged to work normally. There is no intention to put lives at risk its just a protest over lack of meaningful negotiations..

Unfortunately after much management negotiation they have decided that my very small, specialised staff group are not going to go for exemption as we are not 'critical'. I work in Cancer. I think we are critical. It cannot be rescheduled to 'another time'. There may not be another time for this patient. Even one day extension may have a detrimental effect radiobiologically.

Apparently if I do strike, one option is to come in and 'catch up' for free over the weekend. Unfortunately my union rep is on holiday all next week.

Well if you as a youngster cannot be bothered to stand up for your conditions it should not surprise you if those with 5 -10 years to go do not bother. After all they are the ones with the least to worry about. Those with the most to lose are those with a career ahead of them and expecting a few promotions..

It is not that I am not bothered (I have had blooming insomnia over this over the last three days!!!) - it is just that withdrawing my services is rather a blunt instrument to explain why we are unhappy about the lack of communication over pension changes and future changes. I would love to have a career ahead of me with promotions. Moving to the private sector may help me with that...

Unions are not arguing that there should be no changes only that the changes should be managed in a differet way. By not protesting, you are saying to the government keep increasing my contributions and reducing my benefits I really do not care.

No. Thank you BobQ for your helpful comments in making me decide and I wish you all the best for your picket. By not protesting I am saying to the government that my patients are more important than my pension, which many of the Cancer patients I see never actually live to receive at all.

    Oog,

I thank you and your patients thank you. Vote with your conscience as you are doing.

    Totally agree with this post.

This is the main issue of unfairness here- "they signed up to one deal and now it's being changed".

And rather than a race to the bottom "we should be trying to find a solution that improves the lot of those working in the private sector."
I don't usually post on here. I totally agree with this post. The hatred and bile from people who want everyone to be brow beaten & tip their caps to their (presumed) betters is amazing.
I will add this though - read this and make your own mind up.

Which union are you in? The RCN isn't on strike, and neither are doctors. It's unusual that only one member of a team can do a particular job (though I am one of those workers), and the unions striking in health are very much in the minority, amongst clinical staff.
  • ...and someone else starts playing the broken record :j:j

and someone else answers playing theirs...

these broken records have got an A and B side

    bags I the A side

"Why are private pensions so rubbish? How are changes to the public pensions going to help the private or state pensions?"

    .

This is exactlly what PC workers don't get, Jim in the real world these pensions are unaffordable thats why they have been reformed. Wel are all living longer not just the private sector workers lol.

Yet we the private sector worker accept it, they tell us work from 65 to 68 and we say yes we understand, they tell us the pensions need more money in them we agree.

So why can't PC workers get their heads around it?

Yes the good old TUC totally unbiasses.

I have a great idea lets borrow loads of money and give everyone the same unaffordable pension!! Now thats a plan who cares if we run out before I am 68. We all should have a good pension right?

Long live the taxpayer, long live debt, where is the red flag?

    the figures don't show the pensions are unaffordable;
they show that companies can make more profit the lower their pension contribution; exactly the same way they cheat and behave badly whenever the opportunity arises if it enhances profits and they can get away with it.

which is why we should be looking at all pension provision and devise a fair and equitable scheme for all
  • What you are really saying is,

I am in the public sector, I am different to you I can retire early, I am not interested in the fact you the private sector worker have to work longer. I have to lift patients or teach children I cant do this when I am old but I dont care if your in a manual job its your lookout

I want you the tax payer to pay for my pension short fall, I don't care that some of you don't have a pension

I don't care that my pension is better than your or that in fairness you should not subsidse mine.

Who cares if the youth will pay more due to debt, anyway I am alright Jack lets decide all this after 'I' retire

Nice to see we are in it together,
