Sorry if this has been asked already, but could you technically buy a used, possibly even a faulty first gen Nano on eBay and swap it for a brand new one? It would still be better than the little Shuffle I have at the moment!0

Someone at work has received a free replacement 6th generation iPod and is trying to sell it for £85. Nice profit.
Unfortunately I dont think my old iPod is first generation, although cant read the serial number properly.0 -

Try holding the ipod under a bright light that helped me to read the number.I would like to be a glow-worm.

I've found the box for my iPod but not the actual iPod yet (doh!), however I noticed that the serial number is also on the box.....so maybe see if you still have the box lying around?! Might be easier to read than from the actual iPod.
Off to continue searching...

You can check your repair status by logging into your Apple account (you need your email address and password) - all outstanding repairs should be listed there.
