Rub the shoots off (you can plant the shoots in large pots if you want bonus plants). Store in a cool dark place to prevent further sprouting and put in warm light place about two weeks before you want to plant them out - easter is a long way off this year!0

Hi, everyone, I bought my seed potatoes yesterday, second earlies, early main crop and main crop. Do I chit them altogether, or in order of planting. I have my egg boxes ready and think they will be o.k in the utility room which is east facing. We are going on holiday next week until the end of the month. Will they be o.k unatended or will I leave chitting until we return? No chance of planting before April, as up here in bonnie Scotland we are behind everyone else. I am sure all of you lovely people have the answer:D0

Chit them now and do both together. They will be fine in your utility room.mrslovetocook wrote: »Hi, everyone, I bought my seed potatoes yesterday, second earlies, early main crop and main crop. Similar to growing the potatoes in a pot I would think

We have a thread similar to this already, I'll add your query to it so all the replies are together. Posts are listed in date order so you'll need to read from the beginning to catch up

I've just opened the Maris Peer seeds spuds, and they already have stems of about 2 inches long. Does this mean that I don't need to chit them?
I have 10 seed spuds. How many actual potatoes will this create? I got them from PoundLand, so I could get another packet....?
Also, what it is earthing, and how do I do it?0 -
Just leave them somewhere light and cool until you want to plant them - they may sprout a little more.
I can get up to a dozen large potatoes off each set but it really depends on so much - planting distances, weather, blight!!!!!
You need to earth up around each potato when it is about 6 inches out of the ground. All you need to do is draw up the earth around each stem to stop sunlight reaching the spuds that are near the surface. If you don't do this you'll end up with nasty green potatoes.
