More importantly is now a good time to put my pentland javelins in the bin? (for growing, not to throw away)

Do I just cover them if it is going to be frosty?

I've got my potatoes 'chitting' in the shed but how long should I wait before planting them? I mean how long should the little shoots be? :o

PS I've got 3 varieties - the Vale freebies (are they earlies?) Pink Fir Apple (earlies?) and Cara (maincrop). The Cara already have quite long shoots but I think it's too early to plant those yet, isn't it? The other two just have little pink shoots starting to sprout :)

  • I guess it depends on where you live in the country. I am right down on the south coast, and we hardly ever seem to get a frost. Its been so mild, I have chanced it really early, and my local garden centre (not a chain) in Beaulieu had over 30 varieties of seed so I got a bit carried away and bought 8 varieties of 4 each, hence the need to use pots as if i had put them all in the ground there wouldnt have been much room for anything else lol. The nice thing about seed potatoes is there is such a lot of variety that you never see in the supermarkets. The most avanced are the variety that are grown as Jersey Royals. I guess thats why they are so far along. Still have 3 on my window sill though, now where can I fit them in?
I think I am going slightly mad.....

    Hi there,
Sorry if this has been done already but I cannot find any info on this....
Can I grow tatties in grow bags ?
    If so, how ?
Can I grow anything else ?
Am I too late to do this now ?
Thanks so much, even if someone could point me toward the correct link I would really appreciate it :)
Hoping to pop to garden centre and get grow bags and some things to put in them in about 1 hours time :):)
    Thanks again

Hello! You can put plants of peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes in your growbags.

I'll move this to the Greenfingered board where you'll get more replies.

    Hi

I am growing spuds in compost bags.

My method (but I am sure there are others, and this is my first time, and I am not sure what the results will be)

    1. empty the compost bag
    2. roll the bag down outwards till about 8" from the ground
    3. fill up 6" with soil / compost
    4. plant spuds eyes up
    5. water
    6. as the green leaves start to appear, start to un roll the bag up wards and cover to nearly the top with soil / compost, water
    7. keep doing this till you have unravelled the whole bag.
    8. keep watering
    9. keep waiting

I am at the stage where I now want to peek to see what is growing, and had already stated I am like a kid in a sweetie shop.

My grow bags are going to have toms and cues in when the seeds are big enough, but I seem to be having problems at the momet with them growing.

But this is my first year, and I have been inspired by the show us your gardens thread and the wonderful photos, and the lack of room some people have but are growing all sort.

    Good luck

If I have no plants yet can I plant seeds in wee pots now, keep them indoors and then transfer to the grow bags outside ?
    Thanks

Been to the garden centre, just got lots off bits and bobs. Will let you all know how it goes. Initial outlay but hoping for some return. Also treated myself to a logan berry plant :D

Hi Orkney I'd be interested in how the loganberry does -I am tempted to try tayberries up the far end of the garden but the sheep might have sweet teeth ! It's just so COLD that nothing in the garden is moving at all. And I dont blame them.
