If your mum has just been writing on the envelopes your NEW address, after crossing your old one out, this will generate a surcharge as she has not paid for the redirection service on your student address? I would keep an eye out for a grey card with a "fee to pay" coming through the letterbox, (assuming it hasn't been stolen).... If she has placed your mail in another larger envelope, she may not have put enough stampage on it? Hope this helps?

Is this new? I have done that quite often and people have done it for me with no problems. If it is new then it means that my old neighbour will never get his post then because it's bad enough that I have to keep writing his new address on loads of post coming through and having to take it to the post office. If I have to pay for that? No Chance.

I work in a Royal Mail callers office, and as I understand it from my manager, Royal Mail used to have to deliver all mail (as per their remit), that has not been paid for and has a new address written on it, for free. Things are starting to change in the fact that they are a business and they are not obliged to continue this practice for free, thus are quite happy to generate a surcharge for the recipient (the mail is still processed). I think that's the way of the world I'm afraid.
Destiny struggles to re-assert the pattern that was meant to be.

RM are not the quickest in the world to deal with complaints.

They are if you send them a tweet! :rotfl:

I had a problem where the postman gave my post to a complete stranger who just happened to be loitering near my drive.
Rang Royal Mail..."We'll get back to you"
E-mailed Royal Mail "We'll get back to you"

Tweeted them and got a reply within the hour. They even sent me a message the week after to double check that I was happy and had got everything returned to me.

and the flip side is i had many a tantrum(and physical threats) when I refused to give people their stuff.
I would even get people to unlock their doors before giving mail to them at the door.
however RM dont actually allocate time for such things

Ditto Custardly, or the dudes following you down the street for their giro  who expect you to stop, dig in your bag, through all the different bundles of mail etc

Used to stop them in their tracks by saying, I'll be there in half an hour, just going for my tea break :rotfl:

About a decade ago when I was at uni, I sent a birthday card to my dad. It never arrived, and my mum accused me of forgetting... I was so annoyed because I hadn't, so I wrote to complain to Royal Mail... low and behold they gave me £2 worth of stamps straight away.

Then I realised why. About five years later my dad got a letter from the police, a Royal Mail employee had been opening post and my letter was opened to see if there was cash inside. My letter was held as evidence for 5years until they decided to send it on. I couldn't believe it.

Hmmm on the 3 separate occasions where we've had posties on the take or not delivering mail. They normally take photographs etc. Everything then gets sorted into bags with apology letters and forms to fill in. Have never heard of IB keeping items for 5 years tbf.

I've lived in places where mail goes missing, stolen presumably, and recorded delivery seems to be much more reliable, perhaps because the tracking means that they can trace where it got lost, and make it more likely the culprit is caught.
