Yes, carers is one section that I see that always is advertising for employees. It is obviously a growth sector, but there must also be a reason that they don't want to fill the positions with immigrants.

And yes, probably many more blokes taking the job, because it's that or the dole.

Im not sure its a growth sector? More that it pays extremely poorly for the expectations/responsibility placed on the employees, staff are often not respected very highly and the sector suffers from high attrition rates as people move on to something better perhaps when the opportunity arises?

I'd agree with your opinion that its not a growth sector.
Care workers are like nursery nurses they get paid a pittance for what they do.
Doing all the dirty work as well and having to take a huge responsibility at the same time.
When you consider caring for our loved ones whether young or old should be our biggest priority.
Yet we expect these people to work for insulting salaries doing tasks that save us having to do them with very little reward.

Mr Generali spent some time looking after children in various ways.

Mostly childcare is paid for from an individual's pocket but they never wanted to pay a decent salary or give decent conditions.

I guess what goes around comes around because the kids aren't willing to pay for decent care for the olds.

Take my word for it, it is a huge growth sector.

Just think about the demographics and people living longer.

    A) People live longer

    B) We have an aging population

I was listening to the radio the other day, where there was a discussion on youth employment. One college leaver was bemoaning the fact that she had been unable to find a job since June. She was seeking work as a photographer.

Even very well-established photographers find it extremely difficult to find work in this profession – it has always been difficult, but even more so now because of competition from electronic media. (Every Tom, !!!!!! and Harry with a digital camera thinks he is a photographer.)

Others I know are seeking work in book publishing, for example, which is a type of business in which there are ever-fewer opportunities, since younger people certainly do not use books in the way they used to, and there are far fewer bookshops than there once were. And others still also want to work in a variety of media-related professions (I suppose it is considered to be glamorous, though the wages in publishing, for example, have always been low).

School and college leavers in this country need to be taught not to have unrealistic expectations – as well as to have a work ethic seriously driven into them. It used to be a matter of shame not to have a job, however menial it was. Now many people couldn't care less and have no scruples about sponging off the taxpayer.

I read in the paper the other day that 250,000 of the 1 million unemployed youngsters are actually students in Higher Education. Apparently, they count them as unemployed.... so the real figure is 730,000 (which is however still the highest figure since 1994)

aye, there was some bird harping on, on question time, the other week, about how her college course for song writing got cancelled and now there were no opportunities for her to pursue her chosen career in writing songs. 'what am i supposed to do now?', she asked of the panel. i was a bit disappointed that no-one pointed out to her that she'd actually had a lucky escape and avoided wasting a year of her life doing something which would so clearly not lead to anything.

i blame all these stupid talent show contests. they should be banned and replaced with shows were people compete to get an accountancy training contract.

i would say that the real figure is still 1 million, 750,000 of which are not in higher education and are looking for a job and 250,000 of whom are in higher education and looking for a job.

realistically you need a job these days to see yourself through university, unless mummy and daddy are very generous, so i don't think it's overegging things to include students looks for work in the figures. (that said, i seriously doubt any figures prepared by the govt include those in full time education).
  • My step son just got himself a job it was advertised in the local paper, only warehouse work but still, he phoned and they told him to call in for an application form he filled it in there and then and with NO interview they gave him the job.

The guy told him he had been advertising for 30 members of staff for the last 3 weeks, he had filled the roles but by the 2nd/3rd work they didn't bother coming back in. He also told him he had to buy his own boots as they never returned them either.

It really didn't suprise me there are low aid jobs out there but plenty of the youngsters prefer a lay in and playing on the xbox over work.

Glad he has got himself a job, and I agree about some of the young kids today

I had 3 temps, one particular girl could do the job but did need managing quite closely, she asked to start later and later, I am flexible to a point and was happy for her to do 11 till 7, it meant that I wasn't too confident that she worked proactively when I left around half 5 till 7. I then discovered the reason she wanted to start later was so that she could go to the pub each night and have a lay in and sleep her hangover off.

When my boss said I had to lose one of my 3 temps last week, I chose her, like I say her work was ok but clearly her commitment wasn't there , and given the fact she needed almost micro managing she seemed the easiest to lose.
