Are there any DIY insulation offers still around?

I don't know why they pulled this and now all you can get is the installed service. If you're looking at pay back then you can recover £30 quicker than £130, so you'd get more home insulated if the offers included installed and DIY.

They headline "Free" insulation is also very misleading. It only applied to houses having less than 60mm which must be very few. 30 years ago we were talking about insulating houses to save money. Surely in 30 years most houses have been topped up to more than 60mm.
  • I paid out £200 for a company called SIG to put insulation in my loft in October and then EDF, my suppliers, announced they were doing free fitting for all that were eligible. I obviously was so asked if I could get my £200 back from SIG via EDF as SIG said they were getting the money from them. EDF have said no. SIG say no. Is there anyway I can get my money back off anyone seeing as I would definitely have been eligible for free insulation if I'd gone for it now rather than accepting a cold call offer on my doorstep last year? Thank you

Doubt it. Why should they reimburse you for work done last year?
Tough but that's life. Sometimes we buy something and it gets reduced afterwards, live with it. Unless you can prove you were mislead at the time of signing up. You won't be eligible for free insulation if you now already have it, offers change all the time.

You get what you pay for, the insulation you get from a b&q at that price is not thermally as good as the insulation installed under the grant scheme , so largely it's a false economy .

When you get an installer to do the work you get a top up of say 200mm of insulation, they ensure the insulation is not down into the eaves, they put vents into the felt to help with condensation problems, they insulate water tanks , lag pipes place boards to the tanks from the loft hatch, and insulate and draughtproof the hatch.

If you do it yourself you risk missing things up in the loft like a pipe that could burst in cold weather, or maybe put a foot through the ceiling, at least if the latter happens the installers are insured so get that done for you. Plus by doing it yourself you are working in a dusty dirty environment , so how much do you value your time ?

Do you really need to ask what kind of people run parking companies?

Sorry but on what grounds do you want a refund ? The installers have provided you a service, you were obviously happy to pay what you did, offers come and go its that simple. And SIG do not get money from EDF directly they get paid through the grants agency that the energy companies fund through increased prices for energy.

  • I had cavity wall insulation done quite a few years ago no and a friend of mine said he had to remove a brick in his wall upstairs and the cavity wall insulation had settled down and was no longer there

Does any body know if cavity wall insulation needs topping up after a few years? - if so can you get that free?

Cavity wall insulation cannot be topped up I am afraid, so there is no scope of having more installed. You could ask the original installers to come and check of the job has been done correctly in the first place, they would need to survey the property to do that. If you find that they do not exist any longer or you have problem getting them out, please contact CIGA they guarantee the work and it's quality.

Can I just say though that is one of the pitfalls of installing Mineral Wool Insulation in a cavity, it does actually settle down after a number of years.

    Best of luck.

Does anyone know if there's any difference between any of the suppliers or will they all top up to 270mm?

The maximum that you can install under the CERT Grant is 270mm , you can add more but there is no grant funding at all to do that, it will cost you a small fortune to do that. Also there is an increased liklihood of getting condensation in the loft, my advice is stick with the 270mm that is recommended.

  • Hi,
Does anybody know of any free schemes for single wall insulation?
Or have any recommendations for the best type of insulation?
    Thanks
