And they tend to work much better not attached to trailing extension leads-use a spare wall socket instead.
They will work perfectly well running over separate ring mains.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Definitely not the case. I use homeplugs on two different ring mains in my house and there's no speed or quality difference beteween being on the same or different rings. I suspect that significant performance degredation between rings connected to the same consumer unit may be an indication of wiring faults or issues.There's love in this world for everyone. well i stand corrected and I do apologies when mine did not work I was told it was because they where on different ring mains0

It isn't different 'rings' that cause the problem, but 'phases'. Some properties (larger ones, and possibly with sub-divided flats) will use one of the three phases from the local sub station. A homeplug on phase L1 will not connect to L2.
Not normally an issue in a standard domestic environment, but is it surprising how often it comes up, as each supply will not share the same consumer unit or meter.... but this often isn't evident at first glance.0
