Aarrow Sherborne or Hamlet Carrington?

Oh I wish I could make my mind up about which stove to get! The more I read I keep changing my mind! lol.
I had definitely decided to get a villager flatmate, it seemed to be just what I wanted. Has the look I want, is 8kw output, great reviews and great price! However to use it for solid fuel you have to use the multifuel kit supplied separately. After speaking to a guy from a supplier about this he told me that it basically adds a coal-basket to the firebox. This reduces the size of the firebox somewhat, and is not really as good as a normal multifuel stove. This means I would get a bit less output.
So now I am back to square one trying to find the combination of thigs I want all in one stove......Does everyone find this difficult?

I suspect everyone does - I know my wife and I did!

It's a major domestic purchase in a field where there isn't a lot of consumer-sourced information and where the retailers can be spectcurlarly ill-informed at times.

What other options did you have in mind?

Been looking at the Hamlet Carrington and the Aarrow Sherborne but haven't heard much said about them from users. only one review on whatstove. I want a multifuel with double doors pretty plain and 8-9 kw outpu. You'd think that you would be able to find one easily when you have an idea what you want but some of the prices are silly money! lol

If it's any help, when I was looking for my last stove, Aarrow was often recommended, by users as well as retailers. I get the impression they might fail the 'stove snob' test but they are good, reliable stoves.

In answer to Suki's question I, too, prefer double doors as I can see myself clunking a single large glass pane on a piece of wood or a coal scuttle, far too easily. Also a single door, in my location, would swing out too far. A single door gives you a better view of the fire, but at the risk of increased fragility.

Suki I wanted double doors because I don't fancy a big hot door swinging out and getting bumped on something. I also like the look of them.
I have just realised I haven't been taking into account the extra cost of the stove pipe and register plate!

I like the look of a double door too.

However, I didn't go for a double door model in the end.

The reason for this is that when i tested one in a showroom (lit and operating) i found i got the full heat impact up close and personal.

You are in essence right in front of the fire as you open the doors.

Totally understand about the swing of the single door mind you.

    Hi Kat,

I chose a stovax stockton because it had the smoke control kit and i managed to get it at a decent price.

I think in your case they only go up to a 7Kw (if you need the smoke control kit).

I decided to stick at the 6 (although i was tempted by the highline).

If it helps, which i'm sure it doesn't, i spent about 3 months visiting show rooms and flip flopping choices.

With the possible exception of two stove places (both run by women), i found the rest just wanted to push a specific model and didn't know much about anything else (which was a great shame).

In the end i decided that if i could find one that looks about right, didn't have any awful reviews and met a price point then i'd be happy (which i am).

(o and mine came with a register plate and stove pipe).

I did avoid the very bottom of the market, not out of snobbery, but the ones i played with just didn't look well made / appeal to me.

Yes I know what you mean about them wanting to sell you there own model and not having much knowledge about others! I have experienced that quite a bit.
So you spent about 3 months? oh well I don't feel so bad now! been looking about 6 weeks now, its just that its taking over my life at the moment...can't think about anything else untill I get this sorted. The trouble is with the costs of installing and the stove and everything else e.g. coal bunker etc. you want to get it right.
I am by no means a snob about these things and love a bargain.
My hubby has found this one but we can't find any reviews about it so not sure
