Malt loaf is bad for the teeth, sticks to them. I always used to give my son dried fruit when he was small until my dentist friend said it wasn't a good idea. The fruit sticks to the teeth causing decay.

That's why it should always be eaten with a slab of butter on top. It stops the malt loaf sticking.

    I'm hungry.

I love malt loaf. But I've never been able to eat a slice, only a slab because it goes all squishy when I try and cut it.

The thing about the guacamole made me curious so I found the thread.

This is what really pee's me off. The SD children get to have chocolate sponge, muffins, treacle sponge, custard (chocolate and normal) ice cream & jelly etc but packed lunches aren't allowed anything of the sort. Double standards or what.
If that's the sort of puddings they have at school Becles I might be tempted to add that to the note. 'I consider Charlotte's pudding to be comparable to the ones offerred by school aspart of their cooked lunches, however if school could supply me with a break-down of what ingrediants, calorific value, grams of fat and salt content of the <insert pudding> that was served at lunchtime on Tuesday I will ensure that C's dessert part of her packed lunch is of similar or equal content. Just write it on PMT week. :rotfl:

I do think school lunches and packed ones should be comparable either way. My DD alternates each week, crisps are allowed once a week on Fridays either as a break-time snack and/or part of packed lunch. I think that's fine chips are only on menu once a week too.

ETA - I forgot to ask are the dinner staff only picking up on stuff if it's in a wrapper, so they are looking at the info and saying it's 'not healthy' because it exceeds whatever they've been told is nome area? If so, take it out and stick in a tupperware box or piece of foil.
  • I think the answer is with the combination of E numbers and sugar no it isn't. I expect the yoghurt was full of sugar and artifical additives too so I don't know why they didn't pick up on that. The school ought to be clear about what they will and will not accept.

You'd do better sending her with carrot and cucumber sticks and baby tomatoes as grapes are high in sugar.
Fruit and fruit juice can cause tooth decay. Your better to get your 5 a day from veg.

I get my 5 a day mostly from veg as I am not fond of fruit. Dont mind grapes as they get turned into wine!

but honestly, joking aside - would you REALLY ban grapes from a childs diet? isnt that a bit, well, arbitrary?

Isnt variety important too? The old saying 'Variety is the spice of life' is important with kids diets. to get them to eat fruit and veg is difficult enough with some kids - to suggest substituting carrot and cucumber.............not many kids want those in the lunchbox anyway! grapes are popular with most kids - if thats the only fruit they eat - then include the grapes!
  • We'll all be out buying malt loaf tomorrow.... my son loves it, but has school dinners, grandma got him started on it, I remember having it in my packed lunch as a kid, but then we were allowed anything, even kit-kats
Be who you are, say what you feel, those who mind don't matter, those who matter don't mind.
They say that talking to yourself is a sign of mental illness. So I talk to the cats instead.

Urgh, my pet peev. Lunchbox inspectors. My kid. My choice what I feed them. Don't tell them off because of what I choose to put in their lunchbox.

I was a governor at DDs old school and let rip at the head when DD came home in tears and told me she wasn't allowed to eat her Penguin as chocolate was bad for her - when that dinner lady has a degree in nutrition and monitors my child's whole diet, only then may I listen before she tries to give my child a potential lifelong complex about chocolate.

especially as there is ample evidence that chocolate (in moderation) is GOOD for you!
