Bank statement and passport was sufficient ID for me to open an account with Nationwide. 0 0

You don't need to be on the electoral register. I've opened many accounts, loans and credit cards and I've never been on the electoral register. People say being on the register helps - maybe for them, but at 26 and lived in over 10 houses since I was 15 hasn't affected me at all.
I say you go into another branch with two forms of ID and the booklet and just say you want to open an account, don't mention council tax or anything, as like the previous poster all I needed was Passport and Utility bill.0

Can you use the Flexaccount basic cashcards abroad (for ATM's)? I thought it was only the debit cards you could use?Debtfree JUNE 2008 - Thank you MSE:T0

Yeah the Cash Card is a Cirrus one so you can use it abroad 0 0

All I wanted was a cashcard that I could use abroad. I think the answer is to go to another branch, but I'll wait until my new Council Tax bill comes in and hopefully my name will be on the electoral register by then.
I'm beginning to think there was mabye something in my credit file he didn't like....or perhaps he just felt like being awkward. His letter to me said "unfortunately we are unable to exercise any flexibility in these circumstances". That sounds a bit heavy handed to me and nothing like what's in the booklet. He MUST have the Council Tax bill. And then he says "I would be pleased to continue processing you application if you are able to produce the identification required".
How many times do I have to tell him I can't find the bloody bill ?
Well this manager certainly doesn't try very hard to encourage new customers.0

Legislation against money laundering means that financial institutions have lots much of the flexibility that they used to have. And a person who is not on the electoral register is already unusual as a customer. Since head office have already reviewed the matter and referred it back to the local manager, it is probable that they are being as flexible as the law allows, which unfortunately is not very.0

I don't think head office reviewed the matter at all, they just faxed my letter back to my local branch. I dont think he wants to go against what his assistant said in the original letter to me.And the fact that I complained about poor customer service when I first spoke to him before even mentioning anything else regarding the letter I compalined about not being phoned back. So right from the start he's probably against me for questioning the efficient running of that branch.Any complaint and they round up the wagons against outsiders. He also came across as an unhelpful moron.
Unfortunately most banks and financial institutions act as if they should never receive criticism and are always right.
I know a few people who are not on the electoral register, doesn't mean they are money launderers.
Nationwide should put in their booklet you have to be on the electoral register before we can open an account,if that is their firm policy.0

You are right, most people on the electoral roll are not money launderers, but there is legislation that they have to follow otherwise they could be liable for a huge fine.
You don't have to be on the electoral roll to open an account, that's why they have offered you alternatives.
Your complaint will be filed in the bin as they have things to do.Well life is harsh, hug me don't reject me.0

It doesn't say in the booklet we must have a council tax bill only.
If the manager keeps insisting on the one thing I can't find it makes me think he's trying to be difficult. He certainly doesn't sound helpful on the phone.
Read it again. It doesn't say "there are other forms of ID you can use" it says "may be". They've said that they want a Council Tax bill - so get a copy from the Council. In this instance, there obviously isn't an alternative. It's not up to Nationwide to bend to your whim just because you can't be bothered to get a copy of your bill.
You're having a go at Nationwide as if they owe you something. I'm a Member of Nationwide and I could well do without someone taking up my time and money moaning for the sake of it. Nationwide is owned by its Members so it is my money you're wasting here.
The Money Laundering Regs mean that they have to get certain information. I can tell you that, as someone that deals with them on a daily basis, if I had someone kicking off like you, it would only serve to make me more suspicious and make me more determined to get the right information.
