ex display kitchen sold as soon

We have bought an ex display kitchen with a couple of scuffs etc but on one of the wood veneer doors there is a scratch which at the time we said to the Manager about it and he agreed to order a new door which he has done. So we then paid 3k deposit and signed sold as seen. (not "soon" as above!)

Two weeks later he tells us the door will more than likely come a different colour - he told us "just in case we wanted it to match" I said I wanted to cancel - not buy the kitchen - he refused to refund our money then eventually said he would refund half and the other half if it ever sold as he was taking it off display as he needed the space for a new kitchen and it was going to be stored in a warehouse

We felt we had no choice to go ahead - yesterday we were told that the door wont be here until week ending 17 Dec. We had arranged with him that if the door was indeed too different in shade he would get the fitter to put the microwave in the unit and cut the door down - we would also need to buy a warming drawer so that the two appliances look right next to each other. This means that we lose our pull out larder.

The kitchen we are buying should apparently cost 32k and we have paid just over a quarter. Bargain yes but we do have to do various things to make it work - the island is damaged on one side - we are cutting it down as we dont really want the island to be 1200 and I want people to be able to sit at the island so the damage there wont matter it will be cut away.

The side that is staying in tact has damage to the end unit (no end panels - it is the side of the unit) so there are units the other side that we will swap). There isnt any plinth so we need to get some.
All of this is such a headache and I am really starting to think why didnt I just go to Ikea...it does look beautiful and a bit different so on the plus side I am hoping it will all work out well.

The most recent thing was yesterday as said above he has now said he cannot deliver unil 20 Dec. Before that it has to come off display so will be stored in the warehouse and then moved again to come here I am bothered there will be more damage. We are having an extension done and they wanted to fit the kitchen first week in December - they will now have 2 days in which to fit or we will be left with no kitchen over Christmas!!!! He still will not let us cancel.
The three tall units (integrated fridge/freezer, single oven and larder unit) are 600 in depth but the rest of the units which will all sit along one unit are 750 as they have a wall unit and then a tambour unit above. If the ordered door is a good match then the one with the scratch will be used as a filler panel where the three tall units stand forward to be inline with the other units and so you can open the door. If the door is a bad match then it will be the filler panel.

Have you asked a cosmetic repair such as MagicMan if the scratches can be repaired?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure0

Sold as see means you have fully inspected it (or had faults pointed out to you) and you can’t then cancel it because of these faults.
In my view, that doesn’t apply to the new door you ordered (which should match) and doesn’t affect the delivery date.
Hopefully you paid the deposit by credit card and if so, give them a ring and get them to exert some pressure on the shop (unless you fancy having kitchen fitters joining you for Christmas lunch)0 -
So you have a £32k kitchen for less than a quarter of its retail value, on a sold as seen basis with full knowledge that it was ex display, but you still want it in perfect condition? Struth.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

Please take the money he has offered & try to get the rest back
i am a very experienced fitter the team that takes the kitchen out of the showroom may not be the team that refits it. so more damage could occur if stored in a warehouse at this time of year it could get damp no good plus the guys that deliver more than likely will not be the fitters so more damage could occur quility fitters at this time of year are usually very busy
If u can get through xmas with existing u will get a better kitchen a lot cheaper after.
hope this helps.0 -

I don’t see where you’ve got "perfect condition" from, the way I read it was she wanted the new door she'd ordered to be the right colour and wanted the whole lot delivered when they said they would deliver it.
Neither seems unreasonable to me.0 -
I fitted an ex display kitchen the other week. Nice German kitchen which the customer saved quite a bit of money on. It was a pain to fit, having to cut tall larder units down to base units etc. but the kitchen showroom put a lot of effort into getting it right as did I and it ended up looking really nice. I think you need to make sure you are on good terms with the showroom people if you decide to go ahead with this kitchen. Also if it isnt arriving until 20th dec depending on the size of your kitchen go elsewhere for xmas dinner and get the kitchen fitted in the new year. A badly fitted 30k kitchens looks just as bad as a badly fitted 1k kitchen,
Saying all that the kitchen did end up looking really nice so it can work out buying ex display.0 -
Phew thanks everyone - well it is certainly causing me some sleepless nights I can tell you - I knew when we signed that it wasnt totally perfect - for example the breakfast bar is bashed slightly on one side but that was ok as we are cutting it down to have it slightly narrower - I knew that the handle was bashed on one unit and on the same unit the side of it was dented (it had been dropped when it had been moved) there are no end panels nor are there room for any as the top of the island is exactly 2400 with 2 x 600 base underneath and a 1200 drawer, however because I want there to be seating at the island we are taking out the units from one side, cutting the island width down which meant we had some units spare and could move them around so that the one with damaged handle and side could be replaced with one that was fine. The single oven has a scuff on the metal but I could live with that - I have 2 young children so it will probably get a couple more marks appear but I did have an issued with the walnut door and we signed having agreed that the door would be replaced - he did say it would have to be specially made as the sizes had now changed but he said that would be ok so that is the basis that the agreement was done on and of course I expected it to match - couldnt believe it when he said "just in case you were hoping it would match".
Now the ruddy thing isnt going to get here until 3rd week in Dec. I feel physically sick - wish to hell I had never been into the shop. Wish I could get out of it - its even causing hubby and I to have words now. The kitchen was coming with a 5 ring gas hob but we ahvent got gas so the chap said he could put the induction into the deal instead - which was fab but the sizes are different so we have to get a metal collar made. It just goes on and on. I wanted to have all the wet things in the island and the hob on the back wall so we could have an extractor that has all changed now - the hob is in the centre and we have a semi vaulted ceiling so cant have an island extractor - we are going with one on the wall. The sink is against the wall. Streuth .....I just feel like screaming.
As you can see from the pictures above the run of base units have the sink at the far right - well we have had to buy a new run of worktop as the sink would have been in the dining end of the kitchen and because of its proximity to the lounge we couldnt swap them over so a new worktop was ordered and we are having the three tall units (600's in depth ) then the washing machine, sink and then dishwasher then the units with the tambours over at the dining end of the kitchen.0 -
Maybe the answer to avoid it being moved twice (one to the warehouse and then again to us - we are 3 hours away) and also to get it here a lot sooner - maybe we should just say lose the larder part of the tall unit on the right hand side - cut the door down and put the combi microwave and warming drawer in there - that would then be done by their fitter who apparently is brilliant. Get it delivered here - our builder is smashing he is a carpenter by trade - he subs the bricklaying part of the job out - he is fitting the kitchen. At least then the original door will be on the unit - so the colours are all the same - the integrated fridge freezer will be in the left hand of the tall units - then the single oven in the middle and combi micro and warmer in the rhs.
then washer, sink, dishwasher, drawers with wall cupboards and tambours above.
We lose the larder part but there should be enough space with the rest (although I have never not had a larder unit)
To avoid having to get this metal collar thing made I also wonder if we should just buy a black worktop (shutters in the tambours are a smoked black glass) get it big enough for the island but instead of having it 2400 maybe get it 2500 and then with the original island top use them as sides for the island so that it covers any damage to the ivory units it also gives us the privacy panels to the island - some people call it goal posts - hope you know what I mean whereby the same width goes up the side over and down the other side - letting you sit nicely at the breakfast bar - but would it go? we would be tying the black in with the black glass and the walnut in with the long run - as it would be on the side of the island or have I finally lost the plot over this ruddy kitchen0 -
Also there isnt any plinth with the island - does anyone know where I can get some stainless steel plinth from - lower price the better this kitchen is costing us a hell of a lot more than it was going to do when we were going to go to ikea - apparently the plinth is 150 and I think standard is 100 - aaaggh!0

I find it staggering that any kitchen could cost £32K.
There has to be a huge mark up on that costing surely!
Even a quarter sounds an awful lot for a tight as.... sorry, I mean money saver like me!0
