Hi, I was just checking what's in my cupboards and I have a tub of Sainsbury's mini meringues from their bakery, best before Sept 12. They're ok to eat, still, aren't they? Thanks for any guidance. Thought I could add tinned fruit from cupboard with ice cream in meal plan.
  • They might have gone a bit soft but they should still be safe to eat.
I was off to conquer the world but I got distracted by something sparkly :D

    Dumb question: what's involved in a bake-off?

I ask, because I've had an email at home, from work because I wasn't there, with the suggestion that we start a monthly bake-off at work, with different themes each time, and starting with Easter Food on Tuesday lunchtime.

Which is our first day back, so am I expected / being invited to take something Easter-y in on Tuesday morning for consumption / critique at lunchtime?

Not entirely convinced I want to play, but at least if I knew the rules I could make an informed decision.

Note: I'm well aware of various TV programmes with 'bake-off' in the name. I've never watched one, and don't plan to start now. I'm rather of the 'life's too short to stuff a mushroom' school of bakery. :D Plus there's only me and DH at home to eat nice food, and if there's too much of it, we'll eat too much of it. Well, I will, anyway.

No-one? I won't have time to watch any bake-offs AND bake anything too, it's definitely one or the other, and I need to get out shopping to do anything serious anyway ...

Well, despite not having a clue what I was doing - I won the first bake-off!!! :rotfl:

They are threatening to do tapas next time, which isn't really my thing at all. But I am about to go on holiday to the Canaries, so someone suggested bring back some proper jamon ...

Tapas sounds like a great idea - empanadillas are really easy to make and quite cheap to do. I made some from puff pastry and filled them with a little cheese and some chorizo. Sorry, I've never taken part in a cakey bake-off - was there a lot involved as I can see it going down quite well at where I work. :)

Sounds more time consuming than I usually go for. 1. remember to buy puff pastry (I've made it a few times, in my youff, and no, not now ...) 2. find work surface in kitchen, rolling pin, pastry sheet, flour shaker, none of which see much use in the normal course of my life! 3. find time to make mess with puff pastry and flour shaker. 4. cook the mess, while feeling annoyed I wasn't more organised earlier when I had the oven on for the weekly casserole.

Do you think cheese and pineapple on sticks would do the job? :rotfl:

I'd say it was as much work as you wanted to make it. Only two others had made anything, but one of them had done two things, so a few of us sat round sampling, and making comments, and a colleague wrote all our scores down.

We didn't make a big thing out of it!

That would be great here as quite a few of us bake, unfortunately I don't think it would work too well because we all have different break times so wouldn't be able to sit round nibbling and critiquing, boo!

Has anyone else noticed that since Dr Oetker bought Supercook the cake cases have got smaller? They used to nicely fit in my tins, but now there's loads of space round them. Does anyone know of a decent-sized and widely available alternative?

    Quick question regarding laundry.

Why do viscose cardigans/jumpers get a creased look after washing?

It's a marbled appearance, not actually creased. It's not colour run from other garments either. Washed at 30°quick wash with 800 rpm spin. Non bio powder and conditioner used.

Anyone else have this or know why it happens?
A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.

Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.
