  • i cant stand the advert, it just encourages such impulse buying on expensive items. I also never thought about the angle of santa not existing,i just thought, aww how cute are those kids on the telly saying their mother is lovely, blah blah blah...whilst trying to read the shocking apr terms, etc at the bottom of the screen. I admit, that yes,i did buy my boyfriend a sat nav for christmas,he found out and told me to send it back ,making me think that christmas really isnt about expensive presents and such, its what you make of it that counts. No wonder companies like park are becoming bigger and bigger.
    ;)
  • I couldn't agree more, it is HORRIBLE, i hate the commercial stuff about Christmas anyway and DWD makes you feel bad sometimes but i'm so glad just now i can't buy electronics that will be obsolete before you've finished paying for them!
c.f. the John Lewis one that is about a little boy who can't wait to GIVE his present, far better!

Also- the tune to the song- SO ANNOYING!

I agree that the ad is bad, but at least partly cos its based on a song called "my brother" that my nephew loves and gets really annoyed cos "the tv got it wrong".

I don't like the idea of trying to make mums feel guilty either, there's enough pressure on parents these days without any more being added. And I thought there is (or was) a price limit for items in adverts aimed at children that are shown pre-watershed, precisely to stop kids nagging parents for stuff they can't afford.

Regarding Santa, I know quite a few families which get presents from mum as well as Santa. My parents are divorced (and have been since I was a baby) so I got presents from Dad on Christmas Eve and then Father Christmas on the actual day. My mum used to tell us that she had to send money to Father Christmas for the presents, which is why we didn't get any from her.

  • So pleased I saw this thread, I thought it was just me who hated it! I have a young child who believes in Santa and I'm trying to make sure they don't hear or see it. The presents they mention are so over the top, totally unrealistic, they are just encouraging people to get into debt.
The only thing it's done for me is to ensure that I won't use Littlewoods.

  • I couldn't resist replying because I too can't stand it. For me it was more about the Santa aspect when I first saw it but the more it's been on, the more it makes me seethe. I have a 5 yr old who hasn't yet questioned it but it may only be a matter of time if she actually takes notice of it.

I couldn't agree more with those of you who think it's disgusting to encourage people to think it's the norm to give such expensive gifts at Christmas and it's even more disgusting that Littlewoods are encouraging people to get into debt for it.

Also, for the people that actually could afford to and wanted to buy such things, Littlewoods would probably be the last place they'd go with their inflated prices!!
  • Do you know I thought the same when I saw this...shocking advert, first implying that its only Mums who buy presents and Dads presumably are down the pub or watching the football whilst the shopping is happening (not my opinion)....ridiculous.

It's shocking that this advert implies Xmas presents are only good if they are high tech and expensive...what a guilt trip.

  • There was a Morrisons ad banned recently for targetting children, surely this is even worse  ?!

    We need to get complaining.
  • Little elf's getting fat and lazy all because Santa orders presents from Littlewoods.

Just think of all that cash back he will get but I wonder what his credit limit is?

Christmas is about children and advertising companies know this and this is why they fight dirty and don't care if you get in debt as long as you get into debt.

My parents never had a lot of money and I use to say to my mom just buy my brothers presents I'm ok as I didn't want my parents to get into debt because of me.

Its your children when they tell you what their friends got for Christmas and they say to them is that all you got?

So you feel guilty and get into debt to make sure they to can brag but its paying it back for the next six months that gets me.

When they are babies they are happy with a few little cuddly toys but when they get older god help us o0.

You don't need to spend a fortune to enjoy Christmas and this Christmas I'm not getting into debt so next year I will be debt free.

Why do we buy presents for our kids that annoy us five minutes later?

Cause they'll annoy us even more if we don't get them any :)
