Argos Mobile Phone - accidental damage, 12 month warranty

Wasn't sure whether to post this here or in mobile phones forum but thought best here. Mods/admins feel free to move if better suited over there though.

Just wondering if anyone can answer my question...

Basically, bought a mobile phone via Argos's outlet store literally last week, all stock is new stock and supposedly comes with a 12 month warranty.

Being the complete and utter idiot I am I yesterday dropped the phone in a cup of drink :o - yeah I know, after having it for less than a damn week! I am so mad at myself for being so clumsy, I've been ill lately and am a little out of it but still, clumsy could be my middle name if I am honest!

It's probably a complete long shot as it's all my own doing but does anyone know whether there's any chance I can use the warranty for this under 'accidental damage' (as does state this can be caused physically). Otherwise, well I am screwed. It wasn't a hugely expensive phone but still!

Anyone had any luck claiming on such grounds or is it not even worth asking them?

Thanks.

  • I would say it's not even worth asking! The warranty will not cover accidental damage, otherwise it would be insurance, not a warranty.

However, with it being Argos who I've always found to have excellent customer service when it comes to returns, if you fancy telling a lie by omission I would let it dry out, take it back, and say it's stopped working and see if they will exchange it.

I've always found them pretty good so you never know your luck!

    agree with the above....
to dry out a phone, put it in a bowl of rice (covered)..... the rice will absorb the water.....

I dropped my iphone in Pepsi, and kept in rice for 2 days after :) had to replace the LCD screen mind!

If they are clued up the moisture tabs inside the battery area will show moisture has been present - be carful if you choose to 'manipulate the truth'
  • does your home insurance have accidental damage....

Although they normally dry out pretty well if it was a none sugary drink (sugar sticks to the components and often causes problems)

I can't believe people are suggesting op defrauds the retailer .

I wouldn't suggest he lies if they ask him directly if he dunked it in his drink, but a little omission perhaps...

Also I'm sure if they did replace it the OP would be so happy with the level of service he would happily shop there far more regularly and thus it's for Argos's greater good :p

There's a silver lining on every cloud ?

Might try that logic with my landlord... i'm not paying you this month because i've dropped my 40" plasma, but i'm planning on living here for a few more years yet so don't worry i'll pay you another £10-£15k before I leave.

May be a slightly different example, but you get the point :).

If I was in ops position, as much as i'd like to get out scot free, I don't think this is right. Don't think it can be justified either by the prospect of future orders.

well did you not know you are not to wash mobile phones ;)

but now on a serious note, either home insurance or a little white lie to Argos.

next time when you get a mobile phone you can get insurance from as little as £1.50 a month, which would cover things like this.

we all do daft things i once dropped mine in the toilet

I do agree with you Arcon, I was saying it very tongue in cheek.

I wouldn't do it either, I was merely pointing it out as an option, it is then up the OP what they choose to do with that information.

Indeed, especially since no retailer would ever try to defraud a consumer.
