i think you've just backed up my point there.Tigsteroonie wrote: »Given that performance measures (when not statistics-based) are purely subjective anyway, does that matter?Come on, it's not rocket surgery is it?0 -
We're not allowed fag breaks but the eaters in the office go and make toast or porridge or whatever they are having and spend longer in the kitchen then I would outside. IMHO, you just have to deal with what you get."There is no substitute for time."
Competition wins:
2013. Three bottles of oxygen! And a family ticket to intech science centre. 2011. The Lake District Cheese Co Cow and bunny pop up play tent, cheese voucher, beach ball and cuddly toy cow and bunny and a £20 ToysRus voucher!0 -

I shouted back " you must have good hearing missus ! to hear my fart from that distance " !

The managers decide whether someone is a good performer, an average performer, or a poor performer. Being seen taking 30 minutes out of the paid working day is going to affect that opinion.
no it isn't. Being seen to be a poor performer will afect that opinion, having a smoking break, playing on the internet or rolling in twenty minutes late won't change the opinion if the person does their job better than somebody who is crap at their job but has a perfect attendance.0 -
Friends actually did an episode about this, where Rachel tried to take up smoking to climb the corporate ladder.
On the flipside, to use smoker logic, it means that non-smokers are discriminated against for not smoking, because they don't have an opportunity for similar interaction :P.
Yes that is me being facetious.
More seriously, all the smokers who say, "my smoking breaks are justified because I turn up early, do loads of work, don't get my full breaks and do loads of unpaid overtime...." do you honestly think that there aren't non-smokers who do the same, but don't get these additional breaks?
I hate smoking, but at my last company I always used to go and stand outside when certain other people went out. Too many decisions were being made out there to stay inside...0 -
As an ex smoker who couldn't careless about other people smoking, you whingers don't realise how sad and petty you sound!!!0

the company i used to work in gave us a half hour lunch break. The smokers of the office would split it into two 15 minute breaks - one before the busy period, and one after. We never had any extra break!
Complaining about people taking smoke breaks, or tea/coffee/cooking breaks sounds pretty petty. By the same score, every man (and childless woman) could complain about maternity leave - Men are not going to use a whole year off to have a child, so why should they have to make up the work for the pregnant woman?0 -
I don't care about smokers taking the breaks, everyone needs a break. It's when the manager's complain about you having a bit longer for lunch or being a couple of minutes late and it being noted in performance reviews when no one says a word about fag breaks. Companies always want you to be flexbile but should realise it goes two ways, so I was 5 minutes late one day but they forget when you take work home with you and spend 3-4 hours on it over the weekend.0

*Cough* I wonder how long it will actually be before smoking in the workplace is outlawed entirely. I give the country 5 years.0

The answer is really simple and has already been suggested....start smoking....and stop crying...0
