The unfairness of smoking breaks!!!

This is something that has always made me mad!!!

I am a non smoker, and have always found it hard to accept that employers often allow staff to have a couple of 5 min (approx) breaks in the day to go pollute the air!!

Why cant non-smokers be given the same extra breaks?

  • where I work fairly often when a smoker goes for a 'fag break' a non smoker will take their coffee and go with them. Less so during the winter / in the rain admittidly.

    If you wanted a break and went out at the same time as a smoker would your boss stop you? have you tired it?

    I have to say that have never really had time to go off for a break, until 3 years ago I was a chef... and would never have gone off during a shift... (dont get me started on the cross contamination risks of catering staff going off for fag breaks!! )

    and in my current job, I dont have time to be going for a break in the cold (and polluted air.. :D )

    SOrry to sound a right grump....

    You know when you're drawing your pension at 80 and they're 6 feet under and part of the reason your pension is as good as it is is because the pension provider isn't paying their pension, will you be moaning then?

    And no, I don't smoke! It's swings and roundabouts, dearie!

  • One place I worked said that any breaks had to be deducted from the lunchtimes, but it wasn't 'policed' and eventually it got to the stage where a third of the office went out together and chatted so long, with more than one ciggie, taking between one and two hours worth of fag breaks a day (it was timed - I am not exaggerating!)!!!! needless to say the non-smokers did complain and it did get stopped, but I never understood how come the management never spotted it.
    But most places (and I have been in a fair few as I often temp) say that non-smokers can have a break as well.;

    And when you have found out that your pension is really quite worthless after all your saving ?

    my work are quite relaxed about smoking breaks, as long as the works getting done then the dont mind
    however works the same for people who go for endless coffee/tea breaks as well

    My last job we got 2 15min break and an hour for lunch, we could shorten lunch and use flexi time so it didn't really affect me at people could smoke during those times.

    Another job I had people would have fag breaks, not loads but I would then make a point of going for a 5 minute break to refreah and get a drink, nobody said anything.

    I have heard that somewhere local to me has now insisted smokers clock out for their fag breaks.

    You don't have time for a break and it sounds like you don't want it. You haven't commented on how smokers taking breaks is affecting you. What exactly is it you want?
