simpson: perhaps you regret that the link is broken?

gprs is too latent but you could still use it like a single-duplex radio.

3G is perfect. Is EDGE too latent too? If so I wonder if they introduced EDGE because 3G could be used for VoIP.

Ah, they've repriced it to block VoIP:

    £2/mb - ridiculous!

but hang on, they're advertising sype for use with it...

Order of events: Banks lose our money -> get bailed out -> were inflating GBP to cover it -> now taxing us -> next will grab your funds direct -> things get really desperate to balance the books. What should have happened?: banks go bust and we lost our money much quicker

Does anyone know if you can VOIP over the newer wireless mobile phones through home/office wireless broadband? I'm sure the technologies are getting there, but non techie me doesn't know if we're there yet.

That's very possible using WIFI. But you need the VoIP software on the phone. Because I haven't got a phone that has WIFI (wireless LAN & internet), I haven't looked for any.

I'll have to make a step by step guide when I got some time free

mmmmm free calls? gprs data rates can get expensive.

I already voip on my mobile using t-mobile's gprs. On pay as you go T-mobile charge me a max data usage fee of £1 a day but even so the voip rates are only worth using for calls to landlines. I have not found any voip supplier who can beat t-mobiles mobile-mobile call rate of 12ppm so its just not worth using voip for mobile to mobile calls.

Like using voip on your pc the driver for voip on a mobile is basically one of tarrif'ing and in the same way as its now faily easy to beat voip pricing on your landline dont be surprised if the rug gets pulled out from under the feet of voip on your mobile.

If you're not on a flat data deal then forget voip, my statement from t-mobile show very high data usage for these gprs voip calls - you're in cloud cuckoo land if you think you can call cheaper using gprs voip. Call quality is also rubbish (3G probably works a lot better).

Regarding using wi-fi rather than the mobile operators data network you not only have to find a voip supplier with good call rates, you also have the problem of finding an open hotspot. Of course you could pay for wifi access but then the cost of access plus call delivery cost becomes prohibitive again.
  • After investigation I was told that GPRS is laggy, like a 1 or 3 second lag.

Do you not get this problem?

Another option for calling is internet cafes but it's stressful and not worth it just for the call

  • I am reviving this thread as with more widespread internet linked to mobile phone contracts, it is possible to make much cheaper calls via mobiles. To an extent, I have no use for a landline anymore.

I have downloaded Skype on my mobile and it works with my WAP contract.

I also have 600mns inclusive with my mobile contract so I use skype to go (part of my Skype subscription) to make international calls by calling the skype to go national number. I used to do this with Voipcheap and others, it works.

My next step is to get a phone with Wi-Fi and use my own, friends' or hot spots. The advantage is that I would need less minutes and less internet allowance for my mobile phone, thus lowering my contract or go PAYG.

Has anyone gone that route as well? I need to balance cost/convenience and reliability.

Very good. I just recently got a Nokia E63. Besides it's on SIP client which I have configured for VoipCheap, I have installed fringe and Nimbuzz on it and they both work very well. I use voipCheap on the applications without problems.

Try Fring + VoIPCheap on something like an N95 and Three 3G £10/month or Wifi for 1p calls and cheap international calls.

You need either 3G coverage or Wifi though. I find 3G doesn't work very well but it could just be me.

Alternatively try to use Skype because that's intended as ok on Three.

Just to say I do use both a SIP provider (Vyke) and Skype with EDGE and they do work quite well. However I have found that you have to stay in roughly the same spot, i.e. they don't well when you are walking on the street. They are fine when I am at home or in my office though.
