So suzzi2704 works for the post office, can i ask do you work behind the counter at all, if so can you tell us where. just so i can make sure i never use the post office you work at.

If what you are trying to say is correct then all the literature royal mail have printed about compensation for 1st class mail & the cost of training postal counter staff & the phone helpline is a total waste of money as they all give the same info of all mail has compensation upto £32 with POP.

Only thing that recorded delivery has anything different to standard mail is the signature part & it is your proof of postage.

Sorry for sounding so harsh, but there is nothing worse than someone claiming to work for a company and then go get there facts about them totally wrong.
Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j
  • As I understand it, compensation should be paid for missing standard mail up to a maximum of £32 when POP is provided, BUT to cut down on fraudulent claims, RM ask the intended recipients of a random sample whether the specified item of mail did in fact arrive, and have been known to withhold compensation if non-delivery is not confirmed. This is not such an issue with Recorded mail, since in theory at least, it will be signed for if delivered and unsigned for if undelivered.
I don't think Recorded is worth the extra expense for eBay items. It is useful for sending important mail such as legal documents, so the recipient cannot simply ignore the item of mail and later allege it didn't arrive. I've taken to using Recorded when sending forms to the Inland Revenue since they developed a bad habit of claiming not to have received forms I'd previously sent.

I put in a claim for item undelivered which I had sent recorded. They contacted the buyer and she was supposed to send back a letter saying that she didn't receive the item but...she didn't return the letter and they wrote to me saying they wouldn't refund me (I posted a thread about this) I argued with them that they could plainly see it hadn't been signed for but they had an answer for everything. After several phone calls and I think I wrote a letter to head office they eventually refunded me but it was a fight!
I still send most thing recorded though but I weigh my items for an accurate price and my postage is way under other ebayers selling the same thing. I get a lot of people saying item has not arrived and I can check up on this and more often than not it tells me that it is at their local sorting office as they were out but the postman failed to leave a card saying this.

Currently got this problem with 2 items from last summer, i refunded and buyers haven't returned letters to royal mail to confirm non receipt, therefore royal mail refuse to pay out. what did you have to do to get your money back?

If you sent it by R.D. and Royal Mail have no Proof Of Delivery, then they have no choice but to pay out. They may "try it on" and, if they do, you just have to be insistent. At the bottom of your letter type "c.c. Councillor xxxx" where xxxx is the name of your local councillor.

It's up to you whether you actually send a copy to him/her but the note usually does the trick.

To be honest Neil there is NO need for that at all.

Everything Suzzi said is true. Simple as.

Though you are still covered up to £32 with normal postage there is no proof for example thus its up to Royal Mail whether they believe you and want to pay out!!! With recorded theres no argument for it........

If your going to talk like that to people that are trying to help this forums not the place for you. I hope other people agree with this too!

    Sorry, not being harsh...

  • Oh and just to finish it off.. quote from royal mail:

First Class mail (stamped and meter items)

Over 90% of First Class mail arrives the next working day, but if yours doesn’t, the information below will tell you how we can help.

Has your mail item arrived five or more working days after it was posted?
If so, your mail is classified as ‘delayed’, and we’ll give you compensation of 12 First Class stamps. If you provide additional evidence of delay and your claim for compensation is accepted, you will be sent a cheque for £5, or for £10 if your item has suffered substantial delay (i.e. was delivered more than eleven working days after the day of posting') and you provide additional evidence or proof of delay.

What happens if your mail is lost?
If your mail gets lost, we’ll give you a minimum compensation of 12 First Class stamps. However, if there was something of value in your mail, we'll refund the actual loss, up to a maximum of £32 or up to the market value, whichever is the smaller amount. Please apply for this within 12 months.

Please note that we do not pay compensation without an original certificate of posting being produced.

If you’d like to claim for late or lost First Class mail, you can do so here

    - Please note that the bit in bold proves that without this proof of postage certificate, you haven't got a chance. With recorded delivery you have proof of postage anyway!!!

    Taken from website:

    No more arguments. Good.

EDIT: One more thing, compensation is Royal Mails department. The post office is merely giving the customer what he/she wants. So why this would be the Post Offices training fault I don't know! I'm sure Suzzi is great at her job if you need anything... though if you ask her for a compensation claim cos of lost postage.. wrong company mate.
