  • I do my own highlights always have done although not really for money saving benefit more I don’t trust the hairdressers to do it how I like and only have my hair cut three times a year! Although it’s not a cheap cut when I do, but they do send me vouchers for my birthday. £10 off comes in very handy!

When the kids get sweets as presents we use them for thier snack at school etc (we're still working on the xmas ones!) I also dye my (completley grey if I don't) hair myself and found a hairdresser who does dry trims for all 3 of us for £10.50

I'm all in favour of buying generic paracetamol etc. instead of branded painkillers, but does anywhere do a cheapie decongestant? I am just getting over a bad attack of flu and have found that nothing works to clear my chest except Beechams Flu Plus hot drink sachets. They work out at about 58p per dose, which seems very pricey, but if I want to breath during the night I just have to pay up. Unless anyone can recommend a cheaper substitute.

The cheap cold and flu capsules from supermarkets have exactly the same dose of decongestant in them as the Sudafed cold and flu capsules.

Read the back of the label, it's paracetammol, caffeine and phenylephrine hydrochloride (the decongestant bit) in them all.;)

  • My husband has not been to a barber for 20 years (I cut it) and my son has only been once - to a hairdressing school, otherwise I cut it. I cut my own and go to the hairdressers about every 2-3 years.

Have you tried placing some "vick vapour rub" in a bowl and add boiled water ..... quick stir. Make sure you close your eyes!!!! . place yourface over the bowl and have a huge towel over your head. Good to clear the stuffy nose - been doing that for years....... Do make sure eyes are closed

By far the cheapest decongestant is menthol crystals. You buy a very small tub from chemists, Boots have them. They are crystals of menthol. You put a small pinch in a bowl or cup of hot water and sniff. You can also reuse them when they go cold decant the wter and top up. I have had a tub for years and they only cost pence.

  • I've been cutting DH's hair since we've been together (almost 5 years), and last Sunday I took a VERY brave step in money saving - OH dyed my (waist length and hi-lighted blonde) hair for me so I can now save the £70-£100 on hairdressers costs.

Unfortunately, the box of dye said 'mid brown' but I now look like Morticia Adams. Or possibly Angelina Jolie (after she's eaten Brad) :rotfl:

BUT - it only cost £7 so have at least saved some money!

Hi Prophecy girl - can I ask which type of dye you used? I need to do my hair as it is a real mess and I need to go to interviews. Can't afford the salon prices. Help appreciated. Thanks

Why not get your hair cut, dyed and styled at your local college? At my local college it's only a fiver. The students are fully supervised so nothing can go wrong.
