First time seller - need advice please

Hope someone can help me out.

I posted my first ever item for sale on ebay last week. Because I hadn't sold before, I limited payment to paypal and buyers to UK. Even though this restricted possible buyers, I wanted to keep it simple.

Anyway, I was well happy because the item has just sold for over £80.

Now I log in to find that the buyer is in America?!?!

I had clearly stated in my ad that postage was £4.00 to the UK only and would be sent signed for.

I have no objections to posting to the US providing I get paid any extra it may cost me and can send it with the same sort of guarantee as I was going to.

What am I supposed to do now?

wasnt a mobile phone was it?

whats the buyers feedback like, check the recent items they have bought. - go to Advanced Search, Items by Buyer, and put in their user ID.
  • The item is an old car badge. The buyer has a 99.6% positive rating. If it helps, I don't mind putting the item number so that you can see if I advertised it properly.

Tread very carefully. Confirm with buyer the correct postal rate and make sure buyer has a confirmed PayPal address also worth checking out thier feedback . If you have any doubt about the buyer do not send.

Personally I wouldn't send something of this value overseas.

email him and tell him the postage will be dearer as postage costs were only for uk, explain that if he does not want to pay the extra you will relist the item !!
check on royal mail site though as sometimes postage overseas is not much dearer than uk....£4 might cover the cost of postage (depending how heavy item is)

looking at what he has bought previous, in his feedback, many items from the UK....
  • I've checked Royal mail and International, signed for will cost £8 odd for airmail and £5 odd for surface.

I have told him I will bear the cost of packaging (since it is only going to be a jiffy bag and some padding, etc) and asked if he is happy to accept the postage costs.

    Thanks for all you help.
  • I wouldn't offer Surface Mail as an option, sicne the deadline for opening an item not received dispute is 45 days, and surface mail can occasionally take longer than that.
  • Thanks, I hadn't thought of that.
