In previous years its been about £800 each.
This year its £250 each and they have got what they wanted and i have paid for it during the year instead of all being bought in Nov/Dec and being skint in Jan!0 -
I have 2 girls 2 and (very nearly) 5 and I've spent £60 on each of them and I am doing a Christmas Eve hamper for all of us to share (£20 approx).
It's not a huge amount but it is what we can comfortably afford and I've worked out that if I'd paid full price for all the stuff it would have cost £200 each so its doesn't look too shabby either! I saved by shopping around, taking advantage of the sales, bargains on Grabbit and charity shops.
I think I'm going to have to spend a bit more in future years as DD1 wants to choose more specific things for herself but i won't stop bargain hunting.0 -
I don't think it is what you spend that is important but what you can spend without going into debt. Personally I get a lot for my girls, however all of it is bought in the sales (but only when I see things they will want) so they probably get about 3 times the amount they would if it were all full price. I buy it through the year so don't have to worry about spending out at christmas.
I have just been going through what we have this year (we have moved & I have misplaced my notebook with it all in!) and my youngest will be getting some of it for her birthday as they have too much!0 -
Oh my goodness...I had no idea people spent that much!!! I was feeling guilty as we felt we'd gone overboard this year having spent £50 each on my 2 kids! I'm with mcja and victory on the "less is more" front and amen to kippers philosophy... We only budget £15 for everyone else in the family too (parents/brothers/nephews) - are we the meanest family on MSE?

What do you spend a grand on for a 6 and 12 yr old? I mean what type of presents do they get?
I could understand it if they were teens, especially as my 15yo son is eyeing up £65 polo shirts and £400 phones! Clothes and gadgets seem to get more expensive as the kids get older.
It's a serious question btw, and not a dig at all xTank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -

No you are not I might be though :rotfl:Traditionally we have spent £100 on my DD and OH's DD and DS which includes their stockings. We then spend up to £20 each on nieces/nephews, my brother (as he has not kids!) and our parents.
This years are VERY tight so this has been reduced even more, all the kids will only be getting £50 each spent on them. OH's 2 are 18 and 21 both work full time so don't really want anything and I've picked up lots of little bits for my DD (whos 7) over the year when reduced. And the only thing she has asked for is a CD player which I can get for less than £30 from Argos. I can see that I will probably go over for my DD by maybe £10 or £20 though. Everyone else has been reduced from £20 to £10 which is much harder but so far doing OK as I have managed to get things which are half price so still looks I have spent as much as before0 -
Previous years between £300 - £400 each child there or about's which quite frankly wasn't needed to be spent.
This year our budget is really tight, I now work part time (which gives us a better quality of home life) and hubby no longer has any overtime and tbh I think we will have a better christmas for it as there will be no wastefull gifts just because either it was a last minute want or we walk past it and think aww they would love that.
Step Daughter (17) will get £70 cash/vouchers plus a stocking to the value of £20 full of shampoo etc as at uni so thought she would like the nice stuff lol
Eldest DD (8) Re-conditioned Lap top plus stocking = £200
DS (5) Got his big present for nothing using Tesco Clubcard exchange on a bike so will spend maybe another £50 on him
DD (1) Again got her big presents using Tesco Clubcard exchange so maybe another £30 on her.0 -
my mum used to spend about 50quid on us and most of our presents came from the sales and car boots, charity shops and pound shops (ment we learnt to appreate what we had) and also because my brothers birthday falls 3 weeks after christmas a birthday present was also counted in that*I Love My Stash*Pedro's is getting so big he has his own pen0

Where on earth do you put all those toys? I'd have nightmares having to help clear that lot up every night! :rotfl::rotfl:
When my son and daughter were younger, I don't think I spent more than £500 between them for Christmas yet our house was overrun with toys and the more they had, the less they got played with as there was just too much for them to use.
I love it that they're older now, as the older they get, the smaller the presents, BUT the more expensive they get!Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0
